Fuel problem

My yanmar gm10 single is not starting. Just bought a new battery and it turns over. I put fuel in the tank and used the thumb pump. And tried easy start spray in air intake, tried sifting compression valve and the engine is turning but not firing. Is there a fuel stop tap I may have missed as there is not way of knowing if fuel is getting through. Also my starter filter near the tank has no glass bottom. Any ideas?
 
If the battery is good but Easy Start sprayed directly into the air intake (remove any air filter just to be sure) does not cause a single combustion stroke, then you have insufficient or no compression. Try heating the intake with a hair dryer or similar before spraying and starting.

Check obvious things like decompression valve sticking but if that is OK then remove the rocker cover and check that all the valves are operating correctly and also the valve clearances whilst you are there.

Slacken the diesel feed to the injector and crank the engine, you should see diesel pulsing out.
What's the history, did it used to work?
You may need to further bleed the feed tothe injector pump.
If you crank it over decompressed and then throw the decomp lever it should have the best chance of firing.
Beware of filling the exhaust with water while failing to start it! Turn off the seacock until it fires?
 
As RichardS says - if Easy Start is not getting any single firing ... then somethings wrong ...

No good fiddling with fuel lines etc. if Easy Start cannot get any reaction !!

First thing - check that engine is compressing well ... try turning crank pulley by hand ... that tells you when it hits compression ... if its hitting strong compression - then its something else.

I hate using Easy Start. It is like crack to a junky.
Once the engine has had a sniff, it will refuse to start unless one always uses it.
Regardless of others comments I would undo an injector nut & check that fuel is getting there first.
Bleed it properly.
Wasting one's time if there is no fuel to the engine.

bit too advanced for me, How do I check compression is okay?

I agree need to see that fuel is getting through. I guess I will have to bleed the system afterwards. Is there a fuel stop button/switch somewhere. A book I read said there is a fuel stop switch out with the engine compartment in case of a fire. But can't see it.

Try turning the engine over by hand. Just use any of the pulleys or even just pull the belt around. If you can turn it a couple of revolutions without using a spanner then you have no compression. If it turns easily with a spanner on the crank pulley nut then you have limited compression.

Is easy start some sort of ignition spray? I tried this but the air filter was still on. When I turned it over and sprayed the engine turned over faster but it was not combusting or firing. But it certainly spun quicker as I had to take me hand away as I thought it was going to start. I tried again without the spray but nothing. I sense it is the fuel not getting in.

not sure what you mean. I can turn with the handle so what am I looking for or feeling for?

If you can turn the engine over easily with the starting handle, then you have no compression and it will never start. As you turn the handle you should feel it getting harder and harder to turn until you really have to put some real force into it to get it over top dead centre.

Once again, we get the complete and utter bullshit re: Easy Start. But you're right about checking fuel as far as the injector.

Another question - has the engine been running OK in the recent past? If so, sudden lack of compression is unlikely. I'd check fuel first.

Can you turn it 360 degrees easily ?

Or do you find it getting harder and harder to turn till you really have to give it some effort to turn at one point ?

Suggest remove Air Filter - spray Easy Start into intake pipe.

Oh - ignore the sooth sayers about using Easy Start ..... it does not create an engine that will only start on Easy Start.

I've had Fordson ... Dexta ... Ford ... Belarus tractors .... boat engines .... all sorts that needed a helping hand when really cold with Easy Start ... never had any trouble starting without unless Cold Start wasn't working in winter.

It is true that excessive is not advised ... but using to start a reluctant engine is fine.

He doesn't need EasyStart, he needs to ensure that diesel is getting through first.

Ignition Spray ??? Are you talking water dispersant spray or spray to start an engine ?

The main part of Easy Start is Ether or derivative ...

Yeh great ..

But he's not getting it to even pop on Easy Start - so what good is getting diesel up there if he cannot even get a pop on ES ??

If he got it to pop on ES - then I agree with you.

But lets get it to at least show some life .. before playing about with pipes and unions.

Plus - we are not even sure he's got compression. As you and all know - a Diesel needs serious compression to fire up ... and judging by his later remarks he may .. I say MAY ... have lack of compression.

Does the Yanmar GM10 have a decomp lever ? Maybeif it does - that's not closed properly ?

It's not "popping" on EasyStart because there's no fuel getting in.
