I assume the OP wants to see the sights of the Menai Straits, or visit some friends. The Irish Sea is only about 50 miles wide between Anglesey and the Irish coast, so hardly a major diversion in a speedy motor yacht. Also exiting Menai eastwards would set up well to visit the Isle of Man.
Without wishing to offend those who sail and live in North Wales and the Menai area but it will. "the sights of the Menai Straits" 😁 😁 😁 😁 😁 😁 😁 😁 😁 😁 😁 😁

Good Evening all together!

Many thanks for all your good advices! I‘ m very happy to get so many competent information.

This helps us very much in our further trip planing.

Please, if I write with my „German English“ complete nonsense, give me some help to improve my communication.

But until now it seems that you can understand my „babble“.

Cordially!

To your thoughts about the planned route.

2022 we advanced along the English South Coast until the Isles of Scilly.

Very nice trip, also the way back to IOW, and nearly 6 weeks in Yarmouth, Lymington, Bucklers Hard, Gosport.

Reading the pilot books the wish arouse to push on to Padstow, Bristol Channel, Anglesey, Menai Strait, Liverpool, IOM, Dublin, Belfast, Bangor

Port Ellen, Crinan Canal, Caledonian Canal to Inverness and back to Normandy in comfort.

So far in theory. My multifunctional crew that I have married and which I’m most time happy with has a mental problem with wet and cold weather and is not yet seriousöy motivated.

I hope I can collect some arguments to increase her enthusiasm here in the forums.

Searching for the geographical highlights along the Welsh, Scottish and Irisch coasts I found the Menai Strait, therefore the interest for this passage.

Cordially! Stefan

Your English is good and undoubtedly far better than most of us would be writing in German! As an aside our daughter did German at Uni and studied for a year in Trier.

On your other post about places to visit in N. Ireland I would be thinking about Carlingford Lough (the border runs up the middle of the Louth), Strangford Lough (very strong ebb tides), Belfast Lough (Bangor probably the nicest but Carrickfergus also has a marina), Belfast and then north along the delightful Antrim Coast to Ballycastle, possibly calling at Glenarm if there is room (small marina/harbour) and anchoring or picking up a buoy at Cushendall if it is calm (Redbay boats might be able to advise as they build and launch boats there regularly). Rathlin Island has a marina and from there you can hop across Islay and the Scottish coast.

Hi Nessy,

Ich bin ein Speedway und Langbahrn Fahrer in Deutchland! Sehr gutte.

I also speak very little German, but I am very familiar with the trip you wish to make. Your English is very good, you have no worries with the language.

I would make passage from the Scillies to Kilmore Quay, forgeting the Welsh coast. The tides are stronger on the Welsh side. To cross the Bristol Channel is almost as far as to Kilmore Quay.

Once across, we visit Arklow, Howth, Carlingford, Ardglass, Strangford Lough-you could be there a month and not see it all-Bangor, Carrickfergus, Glenarm, Rathlin Island or Ballycastle, Portrush, Colraine and Londonderry. We visit Dublin by public transport from Howth.

Pic shows our boat in Londonderry last year.

You will find the Guinness sublime........................................

Hi Rotrax!

Thanks for your praise to my english knowledge! You make me really proud of!

When I see your nice boat I remember the same model last year in Yarmouth lying beside us.

Is it possible we met there?

If you wish to see something interesting then stick to the Irish coast and when you get to the north go a see the giants causeway far more interesting than anything in the Menai Straits.

Dear All!

First of alll please excuse my bad english!

We are a German Couple in retirement. Our Motoboat Beneteau Antares 9,80 is lying in Barneville-Careret/Normandie, in opposite of the Channel Islands.

After travelling to the Isles of Scilly in 2022 and visiting Guggenheim-Mueum in Bilbao last year, we plan to go „for a Guinness to Dublin“ this year.

I‘ ve been reading MBY, PBO and Classic Boats for years and also followed the YBM Forum and I love the British yachting culture very much.

In my oppinion the forum is one of the best I ever read and I got member some days before.

I hope you can give me a little support for planning our this year trip.

My first question is if anybody knows if we can get the blue CampinGaz-bottles our Beneteau is equipped with, round the Irish Sea und possibly in Scotland?

Another question is if somebody can give me an information to plan the Menai-Street Passage which is said to be bery treacherous.

I‘ m sure some more questions will come up and I say many thanks in advance for your support!

If we can give some advice for Brittany and the French Atlantic coast until Laredo Northspain d‘ont hesitate to ask!

Cordially! Stefan + Regine
Hi Stefan - may I suggest this pilot book. Irish Sea Pilot
It is dated 2015, it may also be cheaper from other sources but it is useful - there a small 'compass' diagrams as a quick reference for each port and harbour showing which direction they provide shelter for.

I suspect that was our friends in their Island Packet SP Cruiser "IPad of Poole"

Our boat is slightly older and is called "Jarrow Lily"

We did no visit Yarmouth last season. We were last in Yarmouth in 2022 at a CA Solent Section rally.

Just seen your post #31. It is not Jarrow Lily-we have a blue mainsail sacrificial triangle. The one in the boat alongside is white. We have a different, side mounted, home made outboard bracket.

We might change to a Motor Boat in the future-a 9.80 Antares is high on the list of possibles!

Well the only problem now is that by going Port Ellen to Caledonian Canal you would miss out the best 50% of the Uk coastline - the western isles of Scotland. It is imperative that you head NE from Oban.
Perhaps you need to extend to a 2 year trip :)

The western isles are low lying and often have low rainfall in the summer months of May and June.
However, the misinformation does help to keep the waters quiet and peaceful

Hi Guys!

Thanks for your comments!

Just at the moment the real problem is my multifunction crew who is very shy of coldness and rain.

I always tell her that surely it will not come so bad she thinks…..

Of course a two year/season trip would be much better and we thougt about this in fact.

Two points let us hesitate until now.

1. We are afraidmof the English Custum restrictions for foreigners after Brexit.

2. The experiences during the last years showed us that after a six month trip with 100-150 h and 1500-2000 nm

there are always some repairs and services to be done and we have great trust in our french boatyard, Beneteau Dealer with good staff where we during the last five yaers always got a perfect service for an adequate price.

Out of Topic

Yesterday I had chance to visit a boatyard near Frankfurt at the river Main, specialised for building ultra light weigt runabouts from compound materials and the restoration of classic boats and yachts. I write for some years for a german motorboat magazine reports about, travelling, history, technic and practise.IMG_9799.jpegIMG_9796.jpegIMG_9791.jpegIMG_9786.jpeg
