Found a damaged flare - police refuse to deal

I suspect chucking it on a bonfire is the worst thing you could possibly do, even with a hand flare.

Tricky one, the CG and police are now alerted to your identity so you can't leave it on their doorstep.

Assuming you sail, maybe tie a rock to it and drop over the side at the deepest bit possible ?

Not very ' green ' but you've tried to do the decent thing.

No need to tie a rock....

When they get really old - say 20 years +, I fire them using a workmate ( Black & Decker not unsuspecting chum ) and a long line ; they work every time.

which is exactly what i did!

All went well apart from the fact I didn't think too carefully when rigging the line to give a pull without risk of tipping over the workmate (never having fired a flare before and thus not knowing what sort of pull would be needed) and arranged it to pull downwards so that the flare was then 'firing' down to the lawn instead of up in the air - big brown patch!

There is a post-script. About three hours later the doorbell goes and it is Mr Plod come to take details; I said "I have disposed of it safely". He said "How?" I said "I set it off in the garden". he said "Great, cheerio"

Ho Hum

try putting it in a bucket of water and then in your domestic waste or address to a Mr C at No 10. Unfortunately in Scotland we only have one police force so by the time thay sort out which region is responsible it will be out of date and beyond being active.

I know you aren't supposed to drop them in the sea, but I frequently sail though an area marked 'Dumping Ground Explosives (Disused)".

Surely it would be safe to drop them over the side there? In a suitably weighted bag of course.
