Or the rather alarming British woman I encountered in a port in Brittany, who was barely able to hide her opinion that my attempts at assisting her secure her boat alongside were more of a hindrance than a help

Her husband was a pleasant chap; though he must have had a lot to put up with. Reminded me of Margaret and Denis Thatcher, or Fanny and Johnny Craddock.
We sailed in company with them for a week or two when we met up in Norderney. She was taking notes for the publishers of a pilot to update their Baltic section. I can’t say that I found her alarming, and she later did me the honour of describing me as ‘venerable’ in a YM article. In a weak moment after I had plied her with red wine she agreed to give an after-dinner speech at our association that year. This was very entertaining, though her first attempt, and introduced some of the members to some language they may not have heard before at such an occasion.

I still don't understand the raison d'être of this thread. Anyone who hasn't met a lady skipper/owner must have led a very secluded sailing life.
I have also met transgender, coloured (though not very many), Irish, and even a few Brexit-supporting Englander skippers - just to name a few. All except the last have been delightful.

Not sure of her ownership of the yachts she sailed, but I once had a lady working for me who regularly skippered yachts between the Falklands and South Georgia. A far more competent sailor than I, or the vast majority of us. She co-authored the Guide to Southern Ocean sailing - not sure of the exact title. Her son turned up in the Falklands one time I was there after sailing from Spain single-handed, and her husband is also a renowned blue water sailor.

I have no idea why the OP posted this!

Just curious. There seems to have been a huge increase in female participation and interest in sport . Particularly football and rugby and even darts. There is a young woman in her 20's locally who has recently purchased her own boat and races successfully . Apart from her, I have only come across the odd female/females that own and sail their own boat. Just wondering if there are any trends in cruising .

There are of course well publicized women who are mainly professional sailors and compete on equal terms with men.

I've sailed extensively with a very skilled sailor, who happens to be female. I suspect she started buying her own boats because back in the day it was the only way she got to be skipper.

The only irritation ever is correcting the dinosaurs who assume that I must be the skipper because I have dangly plumbing.

Perfectly fair question I thought. The chippy brigade are always looking for a row, crack on.

Are you sure its a huge increase in participation and interest? I think you'd probably find that many women have always had an interest in some sports even if a male-dominated world, media and funding meant you saw less of it. I think what you meant was women seem to be finally getting the chance to make their presence felt in the sports your brain associates with men. They still have to put up with a load of extra shit, and get paid less for it though. Bizzarely your question comes 20 years after Ellen MacArthur showed women can compete on a level playing field at the top of the yacht racing world and over 40 years after Tracy Edwards tried to make questions like yours seem stupid.

I wonder how you know? Are you assuming that if there's a man on board he must be the owner? Are you presuming that if you stereotyped the ownership wrongly that they can be bothered to correct you? A quick peruse of the youtube sailing channels will show you that couples sailing as equals is remarkably common and you'll find probably as many solo women or all women youtube sailing channels as you will solo men or all male crew.

Yes there are still some clubs that have a Ladies day / lady helm race, although most of the participants helm in ALL the races on equal terms.
My last boat was purchased from a couple where the wife was the sailor, the husband went under suffrage but did the navigation. The boat was in joint names as many are.

I don't understand what Brexit has to do with it, why have you posted this? Are you trying to provoke people? Have you read, and grasped, the advice from the moderators?

What have transgender and Irish people done wrong. what point are you struggling with, can we help?

If you are trying to sell some sort of political message do us all a favour and peddle it somewhere else.
