Re: I wonder?

Sorry Talon just looked at your thread and thought I'd paste my post from the "petrol v diesel" thread as seems more apt here.}}}}}}}}}}}}}}

Whilst not wanting to get into the petrol v diesel debate, I have always had diesel, well at least till I got the rib last week,,,,,,I wonder when people talk about speeds of 35-40knts in small say 20 to 24ft cruisers, wether if they are honest they ever sustain such speeds for long.

I say this cos it seems to me that if the conditions are not pretty flat theres gonna be a lot of slamming going on, even from other boats wash also.

Then once that starts I exspect hubby gets tap on shoulder from wifey yes?.......

I can count on one hand the times I went out in the estuary whilst at Chatham when the conditions were good enough for such speeds. I know I couldnt at the time cos mine was 8 tons of semi dis but..........

Now this week I took the rib out in calm conditions in that no wind or breaking waves but a generous swell from winds far off, (shes 6.2m long) and once I hit 30-35knts she was leaving the tops of the swell and slamming down pretty hard. Slowed down to 25kts much more comfy.

Come on lads lets own up....................

Re: I wonder?

A decent 20 foot boat with a well designed hull can handle far more than 35-40 knots without slamming, if its slamming then to my mind the throttle isnt being used correctly, its easy to make a boat that goes fast and easy to go fast in it, but to make a fast boat go fast and smoothly is a different story.

I dont rate ribs for true out and out performance I think that they are a good compromise between being safe and performance. They allow designers, IMHO, to build a beamier boat that still can handle chop well and sit stable at rest but when it comes to it, for me, a narrow beam with a deep vee hull is the only way to get true speed, performance and comfort. Trouble I find with ribs is that when things get serious instead of being able to sithe through the water those 'balloons' on the sides get in the way of the hulls natural tendencies and detract from the overall performance of the craft, just my opinion anyway.

Canboria- I race out in the states in factory F1 and F2 boats, my little OCR over here is for purely thrills between the south coast and the Isle of White. Im not sure that there would be a catagory for my 15 footer they all seem to be much bigger boats now. I take my hat off to you for your obvious skill and bravery doing what you do!!
