I am looking for the largest boat I can tow once a year. Considering either a Horizon 26 (twin keel) or a Fantaisa 27 (lifting keel) I want a inboard engine model. I have ruled out a Gibsea 77 because of the lack of headroom. Are there any other suitable designs out there I have not considered?

Having owned a Hunter 26 for three seasons I can reccomend them. You wont be able to launch or retrieve it on a trailor without a renalift though.

What about a Dehler 25?

I would opt for the Fantasia any day, Hunters are good boats but can you bear the way they (Hunters) talk (down) to you and sell by knocking the competition?? There are lots to chose, have you looked at....... Trapper 300s, Trapper 500/501, Sadler 25/26, First 26, Cobra 850, Seamaster27 Jouet 760, Feeling 760, MG Spring 25, Jeanneau Eolia, Pegasus 800 Gibsea 76 or 262 ???

What have you been doing to rub them up the wrong way? I've always found them very friendly. Being a fair bit younger than the average boat owner, I normally get ignored by stall holders at boat shows (even when I'm trying to give them money) at best, and insulted at worst. Whereas Hunters are always happy to chat- at the last LBS one guy spent a half hour showing me over the Channel 31, even though I made it clear that I was only being nosey, with no intention of buying.

If I was after a new boat, Hunter would be at the top of my list- a good company run by enthusiastic people.

Why should the salesman influance your opinion so strongly? My wife got chucked off their stand at SBS about 5 years ago. It did not stop us from buying a Horizon 26 a couple of years later....

Live and let live.
