I'm about to replace the exhaust elbow on my Volvo 2003. Do I need to use gasket sealant with the gasket or will the gasket suffice on its own?
Thanks.

Just done mine. No sealant necessary. The gasket is 1.5mm thick and crushable. I used a torque wrench but chickened out from using the full 20Nm (as defined in the manual - I had read of dire consequences of overtightening in earlier postings on this forum). However I did put a lot of effort into cleaning the two faces thoroughly as they tarnish quickly. The elbow actually wept and tiny puddles of rusty water appeared from 'nowhere'. [I'm led to understand that cast iron is quite porous].
When re-assembling, note that the clamp over the elbow sealing ring on the pipe from the thermostat is a bigger (slightly) than the similar ones on the multibend bypass pipe.
Hope it goes well.

Shouldn't be necessary but my elbow attached into studs that screwed into the engine body. As such a couple of threads inside were shot so used some sealant as well as the gasket for good measure. Worked fine.
