In the below post, I noted my raw water pump needed refurbishing and that was a straightforward (dare I say it, "Fun") process, and we now have no more leaks from that original place.

VP D2-55 - Raw water pump - refurb or replace?

On one of our first few trips out this year (we had our ICC with Elite Sailing out of Chatham this weekend, something I had dodged doing for many years, but thoroughly worthwhile doing, and Elite were cracking), I did my usual post trip engine checks, and noticed a tiny drop of oil under the front on the engine (and under the engine is normally spotless to help spot this kind of thing).

I felt under the raw water pump, and lo, I felt warm oil, yet not coming from where it was coming from in my previous adventure, but coming from further back.

I think the oil is coming from here this time:

Note that gasket, with what looks like a blob of oil lurking there.

Questions then, for the epic, knowledgeable and engineering few:
  • Can I ignore this for the season and go sailing, just keeping an eye the oil? Or could this tiny drop become a bigger problem?
  • How do we think it happened? On putting the raw water pump back on and tightening down, it could have twisted that gasket?
  • Is there any way I can sort this out without draining the oil down? The oil is fresh and new (it is a new season after all). Check the torque on this guy and snug up as required?
  • If I need to replace that gasket, is it a nightmare? Or quite straightforward?

Thanks all - nice to see some sun!!
