Hi I’m trying to replace a broken gear shift , had a look on YouTube and a mercury 4hp came up similar engine and problem etc . Need to undo bolts underneath the cowling that secure the engine to the leg then it can be removed so to get to the gear shift lever . That where the problem lies ,the engine still seems to be held somewhere, thought it might be the gasket holding it but I’ve given it some force but still no avail .Can anyone help where I’m going wrong.? Many thanks

Dowels can put up one hell of a fight when they are a very tight fit leading to using a long lever to break the joint.

Many thanks for your replies . I didn’t know there were locating dowels so I will give it a bit more leverage . Thanks

Thanks for your advice . I thought this would be a simple job after looking at a you tube video ,someone was changing a lever on what looks like the same engine (Mercury) , I’ve taken the lower gearbox / propeller off so hoping the engine would lift off easy . 🤔

I know this is a terrible thing to do but sometimes a sharp chisel driven into the joint at an area where there is enough "meat" to not break can be just enough to start opening the joint .
Some just need a little tap with a mallet but some feel like there is still a bolt somewhere that youve missed.
Just be carefull where you lever as its possible the break the aluminium case or engine casting.
It all goes together much easier !

see item 7 being dowel couldn’t find where second one is located ?
This is a picture of the gasket. You know which holes have bolts through them ( I guess one in each corner and one in the middle of each long side).
The dowels will be in the other two holes.
