Re: Also...

From what I know they are hard to get and always quite expensive. Uncommon form factor and LiIon. Also the dealer charges for the replacement and warranty. I think I remeber having seen replacement battries for an ACR unit offered somewhere in the states, not sure where.
Surprised you need to change it.
Did you use your EPIRB? (I'd be happy to pay £200 if it just saved my life!) Standby life should be over ten years.

Re: Also...

Luckily, I didn't need to use it! ACR the replacement period is five years and the EPIRB has a sticker on the sidef warning that the batteries should be replaced before 04/02.

Re: Also...

Also have an ACR Rapidfix. My spec says something like: Replacement interval for inspected vessels (not recreational) 5 years, useful battery life 11 years.

I think the 5 year intervall is on the very safe side, making sure that it will work according to the specification of running for 48hrs at -40 C.

So I think beyond 5 years it will slowly slip out of these margins and will still be way above 50% after the 11 years.

Probably depending on where it's registered there may be differing requirements for pleasure boats, but most likely it's up to you. I personally would probably go in between those dates and then maybe buy a new Epirb.

I had a quote for over £250 to fit new batteries on a Jotron EPIRB - 121.5 type - as it was so expensive(they are sealed into the handle & replace the whole lot) I decided I had nothing to lose and 'dug and knocked out' the old ones. They were standard Li ion type and I bought 3 from - Powerpacks(UK) Ltd. Unit 9, Vulcan House Ind. Est. Vulcan Rd, Solihull W Midlands B91 2JY Tel 0121 711 3360 .
They cost £41.07 inc VAT & P&P in April 1999. They delivered them with solder tags on each end and all I had to do was solder them in line and re-fit into the handle and re-seal it. I suspect if you sent them the batteries they would solder them up exactly as the original. Good prices but I did have to chase them for delivery.
