I am writing a little piece for my club magazine here in Italy about British ensigns, and have a specific question: how many clubs are there with a warrant for a plain blue ensign, how many for defaced blue, and how many for defaced red? My sources have conflicting figures. Please let's not enter into the merits or otherwise of what to wear...!

Navy List

For the authoritive source of information on which yacht clubs are permitted to use white, blue and defaced ensigns, see the British Navy List, 2003, page 244. The list is now closed and no new clubs are added.

There are 104 clubs: of which 1 is white, 31 are blue, 58 are defaced blue and 14 are defaced red. There is also a special light blue defaced ensign allowed for the RAF Sailing Association which doesn't fall in the list but is sometimes counted, making 105 in total.

It is possible to argue ad nauseum (as with most ensign issues) about which exactly should count as active British clubs.

Just in case this is not realised there are thousands of clubs around the world that are entitled to fly defaced blue and red ensigns in that the country's national flag is a defaced blue and its merchant flag is a defaced red. No warrants are required for those though as they are outside of UK jurisdiction and as far as I know, none of those countries operate a warrant system.

There are also other clubs in the world entitled to fly defaced white ensigns.

While some will believe all the above are not "proper" flags it is a fact that they exist.

Re: Navy List

That link didn't work for me. But I'd like to know.

I sail Foxterriers belonging to HMS Sultan from the Joint Services Adventurous Sailing Training Centre to give sailing experience to Air Training Corps cadets each summer. These come equipped with blue ensigns defaced with a yellow anchor.

Being the only suitable flag provided we duly put it up.

Not been arrested or blackballed yet so far as I know.

Might we upset anyone? So far as I know none of us skippers have any current or past connection with the RN (though we mostly have had connections with the RAF!).

Re: Navy List link.

The link is to a PDF. You need Adobe Acrobat installed on your PC to view it. A free Acrobat Reader can be downloaded from HERE.

Note that it is 2.5Mb.

Re: Navy List

Do RN officers really have time to check whether people are wearing the right ensign or not? I've always found that a bit unbelieveable.

That's purely down to your computer, others with more powerful machines won't necessarily have the same issues - your cpu shouldn't be 100% utilised while doing a download, it's not a cpu intensive operation

I'm on dial up, and frequently download files of 10's of Mb in the background while I do other things

I was surprised, but i just browsing in the walm with a glass of wine so could well be the number of other aplications i had opened. now i will try later from a bookmark.
Im sure it will work but dial up is really cronic, which tends to make wi-fi from the cafe attractive

Re: Navy List

Historically, yes.

In real life...

I had 4 kinds of priorities:

1. What we must do
2. What we will do
3. What we should do
4. What we can't be bothered with

Checking upon ensigns fell into the fourth category.
You might come across an anal retentive type who would check - he would be entitled to - but you'd be very unlucky.

If it were up to me - it isn't - everyone'd fly a Red Duster, and that would be the end of that.
