The throttle and gearbox control cable just lead from the gearshift straight to the engine and are left free under the cockpit (correctly aligned at engine end though)

Are they meant to be 'clipped' to a bulkhead every so often to neaten things up?

No. The restriction on movement might cause a fatigue failure in the future. Also you might not like the increase in engine noise transmitted to the ship!

What is important is that follow a nice, smooth, gentle curve with no sudden sharp turns. This is most likely to occur if the cables are free to take up their own position. If they are not creating you any problem, leave them be.

ideally they should be laid in trays with relatively sharp 10inch radius bends this give the minimum scrub or drag round the curves cliping the up under a ceiling induces bends and increases drag.

A major problem with cables is that if they are not measured correctly the will have excess length and bends.

For example if you measure at 29 inches well thats 3ft so thats 1.00mtr not .75mtr

Cliping them to keep them away from hazards is preferrable and most cables under say 5 mtere are fairly forgiving. insulated clamps will decrease noise.
