Eberspacher heating problems

The heating on my new (used) boat doesn't work. The lights on the control come on, and thats it. The heater doesn't do a thing. No fan starting or heater firing up. I think it's an older version where the electronics is a seerate box near the heater.

Does anyone have any ideas where to start? Have spoke to a couple of local companies and their answers do not give me any confidence at all. They don't have a clue. Apparently they can have a look and give it a go!!!!!!

Not really the sort of answer I am looking for. What happened to, yes sir, could be this or that. The cost to diagnose it will be X and we can take it from there. This does not seem to be how " some of the marine industry work"
 
I suggest you call the Eberspacher company direct.
They are not a million miles form you in Ringwood Hants and probably have a referral engineer near you.
Their website is www.eberspacher.com and they have a list there of dealers and also ways to contact them direct at Ringwood.
Most of the issues with their systems are easily fixed.:encouragement:
 
Couple of thoughts:

1. What's the state of charge of your batteries? My D5 doesn't like low voltage and when the batteries are flattish although the display comes on, it won't start

2. Have you spoken to the previous owner? Did the eber work previously?

3. When you bought it, did the surveyor confirm that the Eber worked?

4. Wasn't this a stock boat from EBY? Warranty?
 
There a couple of connectors in the loom which may be worth taking apart and putting back together. What controller do you have as lots of them will give you a fault code if you push the right buttons.

Check the connection to the battery and any fuse connections as anything dodgy may be allowing enough current through to make your display work but when the glow plug in the heater starts any dodgy connections can break down.

Apart from the electronics eberspachers are a very basic bit of kit.

I'm based in chichester so if you need two heads scratching looking at it rather than one, give me a shout.
 
The first thing to try on an older Eber is the Micky Mouse continental fuse, it corrodes and reduces voltage to the heater, if so replace it with a better in line rubber blade type. Then check the voltage at the heater whilst trying to start, that done report back. If all is well with the heater and cabling it will actually start below 12v at the battery.
 
What model erberspacher have you got? Did you sort the diesel bug, could be blocked fuel.
I would connect to a proven power source and a good fuel supply to start with.
 
If the fan isn't turning it could be "locked out" which means the control box, silver one will have to be unlocked by a dealer unless you have the LCD type display which can read the faults stored.

As said try the inline fuse first, you say you have led light on the panel which means there is power getting to the control unit, I'd part all the wires and connectors looking for corrosion, then have another go, if its easy location then switch on to heat and test the glow plug for voltage. If its a real early one there is a reset button on the casing under a rubber boot.

Try andy Parham, Parham Marine Services, 07834 764528. Ace with Eberspacher, has the right diagnostic kit and will not rip you off. Usually in and around Chichester Marina. recently fixed ours - very thorough
