Fridge woes

I was only teasing you......YouTube can make you an expert instantly....but an expert knows hidden risks you may not...plus, because it’s a boat, the usual contortions apply....and the osteopath’s bill can be larger than the mechanic’s
The previous owner is coming to help start the engine when we agree on a weekend, probably in April.Havinghad various internal combustion engines I plunged for an outboard knowing I was not fit to maintain an inboard……one has to tread lightly some navigaters Dont have a robust humour.

I think an outboard is by far the best for you….if you enjoy tinkering with it, you can take it home and do it at your leisure…or drive to any trustworthy mechanic you know….organising a boat visit for any technician is always an extra headache on top of whatever problem you have. I have been let down numerous times and waited in vain often.
The refrigeration technician came the next morning exactly on time and did the job without interrupting our day…in fact our day improved because the fridge worked…I realise I might have paid a premium…but I did get premium service

I think we must adjust our thinking on professionals who come to the boat. They are not always busy and travelling to a job has to be included in the bill and they have to cover their yearly costs. We had the plumber come as the water heater was not working. He fixed the problem within minutes but he had to travel 20 minutes from his base.He charged 40 euros we gave him without hesitation 50 ………it was our fault the batteries were dud but in my defense the installer didn’t say I need to change any batteries.

An hour and a half of labour at SoF prices.
By my calculations, he would build a fridge for me in six and a half hours 🤣😂
You are at the expensive end of the SoF....and when you are trying to employ someone, you are competing with someone who’s boat maintenance budget might be seven figures....or eight....it’s just the reality.
I’m not unhappy.....I got top service....even if I overpaid.

But did you really over pay?
You have learnt
1/ it can be done
2/ You can probably do it next time
And the boat works again
Enjoy

Yes, I agree. We also didn’t ask for a quote before hand. I’m not unhappy....in fact I am happy because the fridge was fixed without delay or disruption....that’s a win win in the boating world

Did the technician find the source of your gas leak before refilling, Bouba?
From my research online....after you extract the remains of the old gas, you therefore create a vacuum...the manifold gauges will show this and if you wait a few minutes you can see if the vacuum holds...therefore there is no leak.
Now, I have no idea if that is what he did or not...I just let him get on with it and thanked him when he finished....but he did say all is well...so I took that to mean there is no leak. To me, on a ten year old fridge, the leak can be so slow that it isn’t detectable.....
