Hi everyone,

I was recently gifted a dismantled Suzuki DT 3.5 two-stroke outboard. The previous owner tried to diagnose a problem but ended up taking the whole engine apart and then gave up. He just told me that it “doesn’t work,” but couldn’t say what the actual issue was.

I took it because he was going to throw it away, and I’d really like to get it running as a backup in case my onboard engine fails. I don’t currently have the budget for another outboard.

So far I’ve checked a couple of basic things:

* The spark plug works.
* The impeller looks fine.

However, since the engine arrived already disassembled, I’m not sure where to start looking for the actual problem.

I should mention that I’m used to working on diesel engines, but I’ve never worked on a small two-stroke outboard before.

Are there any common problems with the Suzuki DT 3.5 that I should check first?
And do you have any suggestions for a systematic way to locate the fault on an engine like this?

I know the information is a bit vague, but I’m happy to provide more details if needed.

Thanks in advance!

Carbs and fuel pumps on small 2 strokes are notorious for gumming up if left for some time with fuel in them. Mostly caused by ethanol in the fuel.

Best to use non ethanol fuel for your two stroke mix if it's possible to source it at reasonable price. I used to use Motomix in my garden tools but it's £5 a litre. Otherwise use premium (5% ethanol) to make your mix and run the engine dry by cutting fuel supply to turn it off each time.

I tried to let the impeller work and pump water just attaching an drill to the shaft however the impeller didn't pump water is it because my drill is way to weak?
