Hi everyone,
I was recently gifted a dismantled Suzuki DT 3.5 two-stroke outboard. The previous owner tried to diagnose a problem but ended up taking the whole engine apart and then gave up. He just told me that it “doesn’t work,” but couldn’t say what the actual issue was.
I took it because he was going to throw it away, and I’d really like to get it running as a backup in case my onboard engine fails. I don’t currently have the budget for another outboard.
So far I’ve checked a couple of basic things:
* The spark plug works.
* The impeller looks fine.
However, since the engine arrived already disassembled, I’m not sure where to start looking for the actual problem.
I should mention that I’m used to working on diesel engines, but I’ve never worked on a small two-stroke outboard before.
Are there any common problems with the Suzuki DT 3.5 that I should check first?
And do you have any suggestions for a systematic way to locate the fault on an engine like this?
I know the information is a bit vague, but I’m happy to provide more details if needed.
Thanks in advance!
