Dylan Winter, where he at?

I also used to like his KLT videos on YouTube and occasionally sent him a quid or two. Can his later videos be found on Sailing Anarchy? All I have found are pages of rants!

If not, where should I look?

I maybe haven’t seen those videos but I don’t recall being blown away by his videos. My recollection was they were “a bit slow” (as sailing often is) and a bit dated looking. Perhaps that is the appeal for older viewers - nostalgia of a time when TV content wasn’t that great either?

Worth going back to the Solent and then Thames based videos ... the early ones.
I would certainly agree that audio is my number 1 gripe with any YouTube channel. Get the sound quality right, don’t repeat yourself/waffle, my time is too precious for that.

An occasional rant about something is OK, it helps them feel human, but where every episode is a moan it suck the fun out of watching. I honestly think he didn’t understand his audience and didn’t understand the commercial world he is operating in. Now that’s OK if you are “producing art” but you can’t really complain about the economics then.

It’s odd that having fallen out with YouTube that his content is still there… why would you leave it to make your nemesis money without making any yourself? Is it actually still a good shop window for private content?

Isn't it like sequel movies .... you can make so many - then they just go downhill as writers try to keep the viewers hooked ... but so often fail. You can only watch same scenarios rewritten to try be different so often before you turn away ....

But my biggest gripe with KTL - is the disjointed Scotland / West Coast ... it just does not flow from one vid to another as earlier did.

When I use the word 'scripting' ... I use the term lossely ...

I am not meaning scripwriter quality ... My point is that a few minutes jotting down main points and forming a dialogue in the head is worth that little bit of time.
Yes we do write down the voiceover stuff, we tried ad libbing but it gets frustrating if you have a specific point to make. For the episodes though, almost impossible

yes - TV series are even worse for this. Each episode is usually formulaic in itself, then each series may have its own themes but still tend to be repetitive.

If professional screen writers struggle, its no wonder the amateurs do. If they are following in the footsteps of others which many of the world cruisers do, then its also difficult to be original just with the geography. Even if they get it all right - most of us become bored if we do the same job brilliantly year after year so will probably want a change.

BUT some do manage, at least to some extent. A new boat, a new part of the world, a child etc.

I think they also become "slaves to the algorithm" - if you want maximum views people seem to have worked out X minutes every Y days, released at the same time of day EVERY week is the magic formula. That seems to mean people put out content even when they have nothing to say. They also feel pressure to get something out, and have it "the right length", rather than leave more on the cutting room floor or post later. Personally that turns me off so I'm less likely to stay engaged long term.

Doing it solo is undoubtedly hard work, you need to be good at filming, writing, talking, editing, social media promotion, the business of using the platforms and of course actually sailing and keeping the boat going! If you look at TV there's not many shows which are entirely one person either: hearing the same person talk continually is quite dull, you need a costar, guests, etc.

The interesting question is, if you don't screw up the monetization, how much revenue can a good "back catalogue" bring you in the future - presumably with a big following usually the viewing peaks soon after release, but with the right content it will continue to get some views on a long tail well into the future (like repeats on TV!).

Interestingly, my wife has a social media page which often gets 2.5 million views in a month. Features her and our dog, often running on tricky mountain ascents, she doesn't do it for money, just enjoys it.I think she has also put some of her videos on U tube now. It is enormously time consuming. Sometimes I do the filing and she edits, but she mostly does it all herself.

I gave up when he got to the west coast. Having spent most of my life in that part of the world, there was only so many times I could hear him say "Loch Eteeeeev".
I don't expect everybody to get pronunciation correct first time every time. But if you're making and monetising videos, would it be that hard to get someone to check you're saying it right before you make yourself look like a clown? What else did he research insufficiently?

Haha we’ve had some pronunciation issues too. When Portavadie comes up thats wrong and i knew it was wrong but several takes in and i just let it slide. We try hard to get it right usually. Youghal, Howth, and Dunloughaire are fun ones and i think there were some in IoM and NI with odd names too. Today we went through “Helensberg” to Glasgow 😜. Locals are always happy to correct with a little shared laugh over a beer. If we dont know the pronunciation we usually say so and ask forgiveness. I certainly don’t blame Dylan for getting some wrong, it’s hard!

The Fens have their share of obscure pronunciations! Manea is one - you'd expect it to be Man-ee-a, but it's Main-eye, with the "eye" very short. That "ea" ending is common in the Fens - I think it's related to the Scandinavian "Øy" meaning "Island". But in Scotland, if you call an island "Sgeir Dubh" or "Glas Eilan" you've probably got a 50-50 chance of being right!

New name to me, but I have searched him out.

I am not fond of people telling me to ‘find it myself’, so I took a few seconds to find this link for you:

https://m.youtube.com/results?sp=mAEA&search_query=keep+turning+left

If you click on his username or similar it will hopefully give you all his videos on YouTube.

Good to know. The Dubh we came accross recently at “rubba dub” on Bute which is near “rubber duck”. Oh the fun we had 😂

Surely it's not that hard to find this stuff out... just give a heads up on a forum etc and somebody will set you right.

My favourite cringeworthy moment has to be MJ Sailing talking about the Outer Heh-brye-deez.

My biggest dislike when it comes to mis-pronunciation .... is when Americans start naming places .... that really makes me cringe !

Loved all his local-to-me stuff..lost interest when he went to parts of the world where you could actually see the bottom ?

I have slightly more tolerance than you, not least because I discovered after many years that the English have been playing the same game with place names like Fowey and Mousehole.
