At the time, some on here seemed to think he was making a fortune. :D
He claims to have received $18,000 revenues from his single most popular video, Big Trucks in the Canadian West.

It's implied in his statements that his last cheque for £1,700 was his total revenues for the single month of October.

I would't have described him as "rolling in it" but not a bad income for a retirement / hobby job, self-employed doing what you enjoy.

Adsense, no sense at all - what it’s like being sacked by a computer...

But as time went by the project lost its way. He was probably five years too early- Patreon would have been exactly what he needed.
Exactly that; content-producers(horrid phrase) can decide whether to ask for money only when new content is released or for a regular subscription. Most sailing vlogs are like paint drying to me, with or without the nubile bikini-wearers.

Trying to propel a Fisher 25 with an outboard is a good way of making boating such a hateful activity you give up and start golfing.

I went sailing in The Wash with Dylan back in his keep turning left days, good to hear he is still sailing. I know he was very bitter about losing his YouTube income.

Didn't he also have a big problem with using somebody else's photo's & being sued? Asked for advice & that led to a huge row who was right and who was wrong. (BTW, I do hope DW has read Ian McEwan's new book "Lessons", featuring his Woolverstone school).

Plenty of form on here for driving away interesting contributors. Usually started by one or two taking exception to some minor point or comment thus provoking a backlash totally out of proportion to anything originally posted. I'm (very) sure there are other examples, some (very) recent.

It was a vexatiously litigious bottom hole; did DW contest it in the end?

The 24-page epic thread about the copyrighted photo that Dylan used without permission: I have just been Alan Mackie'd

I think I honestly must conclude that Mr Winter is some kind of black hole of unrealised irony.

He's a content creator who relies on copyright for his own livelihood, who gets annoyed with people, calling them freeloaders, who view for free the videos he published openly on a public platform. Then he freeloads someone else's creative content and gets annoyed when they send him a demand to be paid for their work!

Nothing against the bloke personally, but I have to laugh!

He seemed to have quite a bit of support in the Alan Mackie thread - plenty of people agreeing with him that "it's only a photo" - so not like he was bullied away.

I must admit I really like his early video's, and similar to others on here paid up regularly, both buying of the DVD's from him, and paying later to watch the films. The early stuff was so good, and the preparation to get the Centaurs going was really good too. I'm guessing like others I just didn't like the later Scottish stuff.

Allegedly he was a serial copyright ambush artist and had been to court on several occasions when attempting scamming people with his photos.… probably relying on people not being willing to travel to his local court to fight him and just settling out of court.
I’d need to read back through the whole saga to be sure of that though.

It was not that thread that Dylan did not like. It was the one where he tried to explain about his costs. One person decided that he was rich due to the house he lived in ,as usual others joined in to give Dylan a verbal kicking.

To my shame I tried to make some light hearted comments to highlight how stupid some of the stuff was. I do not think that it worked and could have been taken as me joining in.
For this I unreservedly apologise to Dylan.

On another point I wonder if a certain someone has a tracker on this tread as well?

Agreed, as I recall the photo thread was not the reason for huffing off, it was somewhat later. Dylan wanted the videos to pay his costs (a view I have sympathy with) and he attracted criticism from those who essentially thought that he was doing a pleasurable thing that they would think it a privilege to do (a view I also have sympathy with).

earlier posts noted that Dylan was an early figure in YouTube sailing and that Patreon, had it existed, would have squared the circle. I think this is true. I think he started KTL in 2006 and is now 16 years older and 16 years less bothered which I understand. I don’t expect the series to be ‘completed’ whatever that might mean.

I also bought all the DVDs and chipped in on the dollar videos. But as someone said, I lost the plot on the out of sequence and disorientating production of Scottish west coast videos. I think that, as he came to feel less appreciated (whatever reasons and his right) the series lost urgency and this viewers.

he was (is) a top bloke and one of the best contributors to this esteemed place and I’d love to see him back but I think he has decided that paid-for sailing has passed him by, or he has passed it by, whichever.

Yes, it got creepy when the usual sorts started to question why he was moving house. how much the house was worth, where it was and the nerve of posting when he was a comfortable member of the middle class - like almost everyone here of course,

Yes. Some people- as you say very probably comfortable but not themselves making videos- wanted to know why he didn’t want to use any and all personal wealth to make videos, rather like them.

You’ve made a good decision - Ferry Nab is the best place on the lake to be based, as it has good access and a decent car park.
You can even get a bacon sarnie and a coffee from Dan in the bun van when you really need one!
I always thought that they should do a season ticket for the car park at a preferential rate for mooring holders though.

Hi, New on here and to sailing on Windermere...
Looking at possible swinging mooring sites for next year. Any candid thoughts about various sites? Advantages, disadvantages?

Hi J&Mxx
good question.
Could I suggest that you start a new thread on this, as it is such a different question than the main thread.
You will get many more replies than if we start a discussion hidden in this thread.
