Has anyone made the trip from Dublin to the Med, via the French canals? We are planning this trip in September with a 70'MTB and would be interested to hear from anyone who may have made this journey or part of it.

Any info would be greatly received.
Many thanks.
Paul Oatway.

Dublin to Med

Hi Paul Oatway,

Did this in 2003 via Seine , Marne, Saone and Rhone, but you do not say whether you wish to go by sea or by inland waterways?

If by inland waterways, search under "Grehan" in this forum, and check VNF.fr who decide what size craft can travel where and when on canals and rivers in France. There are some requirements as to one's capabilities to navigate, such as CEVNI rules exam, refer to RYA or ISA for details.
There is also some type of embedded signal expected to issue from the VHF RX/TX which is a bit new still, others will come on here to add to this comment, might by AISN or such like acronym, not sure, but sure I don't have it on any of my VHF sets yet!

Let us all know more and much help will be forthcoming!

In fairness he did say via French canals.
We did this from Poole in 2007 and could probably write a book on it. OP if you fine down your question to something more specific a bit it might be easier. I did post an account of the trip on here if you do a search. It was called Poole to Istanbul.
As mentioned above, though Grehan is your man.

I know you said that you want to go via the French canals,BUT did you think of the alternate route over the Bay of Bicay. We sailed from the Green Isle and explored the coasts of Portugal/Spain and all in between on route to Nth Cyprus. We enjoyed all the cultures and people en-route.
Still your choice.

Fair winds and God speed
