I have just designed an online 'ships log' for my small boat. It would be nice to accompany each article with a small image showing the area sailed.

I could scan in a chart and crop the areas sailed but I am sure that would be illegal due to copyright reasons.

Anybody know of an online chart resource - something like Multimap, but on the water!

By the way, the site can be seen at: http://conchpearl.freeownhost.com/

Why not just ask the UKHO whether they would be happy for you to do this - provided you include a link to them and put in the normal disclaimers, they may agree - after all they can only say no!

I was told that every chart created with that system is held in a file in the computer memory until it is changed into a new chart, but could never manage to find the name of the file

if someone could help...

thanks

[/ QUOTE ]Yes, they are. Look in your 'Temporary Internet Files' folders for recent files named ResultMap[?].gif. (? denotes any number). Here's one extracted that way:

Alternatively use a screen saver and image editor, but the quality won't be quite so good.

Just a tiny fraction of the 1,400 known wrecks in the Goodwins area - I believe the highest concentration anywhere in the world. Not only did they not have radar, they didn't have depth sounders, on-line weather forecasts or for that matter a TSS.

Re: Downloadable chart snippets - UKHO

Don't even bother asking them . . .

I had a small area of one of my own 15 year old charts scanned, reduced to about 400x300 pixels, faded to a watermark and then used as a table background - with text on top. This was on a non-commercial website.

The UKHO somehow tracked it down. They were completely over the top and insisted I removed it even after I apologised for my negligence and asked them nicely. One of the most unreasonable beaurocracies I have ever had the misfortune to deal with.

DO what I did to annoy them - get a non-UKHO chart and change the colours so it looks as though it is one . . .

yes I know - it is being hosting with a free provider until I am happy with the design and functionality.

Once I am happy with it I will get a shiny new domain and some decent hosting.

Unfortunately, as the site needs PHP and a Mysql database, all of the free hosts limit the amount of viewers per day. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
