So off we went from IJmuiden to Harwich beating into a westerly force 4. Everything fine for the first 10hrs or so but then a fog clamped down on us reducing vis to 30 mtrs. Going back to Scheveningen would seriously deflate my self esteem so radar on and and onto the the Nord Hinder North. By the time we saw it we were almost on it an its bl...y big at close range i can tell you.
Heard one ship so close it could not be seen on radar but heard by its foghorn, very scary. Foghorned back and tried to call it on VHF ch16 but no reply despite several "securite" calls stating exact position. It finally passed in front of us by the sound of it horn. Never saw it though.

Arrived Woolverstone after 34hrs, tired but happy. Beautifull river Orwell and very good marina. Stayed 3 days. Obligatory visist to Butt & Oyster, nice but expensive. Biked around in the area and in Ipswich.

Next to Tollesbury where we arrived to early and grounded in the entrance of Woodrolfe Creek but got clear again. Picked up a hospitable mooring thanks to the rightful owner and went in somewhat later. Tried to get into the wrong berth first but found the right one later thanks to the harbour master. Met Aunti Vi on the pontoon but far to short as she was going out on the tide, pity.
Got out of Tollesbury by the proverbial skin on the afternoon high with 10cm water between the keel and the sill. We were almost marooned for two weeks.

On to Ramsgate where we arrived at night. SWMBO scared to go in in the dark because of all the illumination on the shoreline but she learned all about lead lights and entering a harbour at night. Made fast at next to a survey ship to be rousted out at 07:00. Thanet, a nice part of England, did the touristic tour on the double-decker, saw the Spitfire museum, the caves and the Dickens house. Very nice.

From Ramsgate back to Oostende in a northely force 6 and then northward back home.

Lessons learned:
sailing on radar,
the treacherness of fog,
getting into a berth on a tidal river with current on the stern, picking up a mooring against the current,
riding a bike on the wrong side of the road (scared the living daylight out of SWMBO),
wind always comes from the wrong direction
England is very expensive for us continentals,
People are very nice (but i knew that already),
the staggering number of public footpaths that go over everybody's property

Happy sailing, Steffen

I'm glad you liked it. Never crossed the North sea myself so you have my respect, it sounds character-forming, but I learned to sail at Burnham and love that part of Essex. Next time you could go to N. Fambridge, upriver Battlesbridge then off to Ramsgate via the shortcut, and down channel to Rye. If you dare (I never did!)

Steffenn, you obviously haven't learned all that you need to do with a radar..... If you don't see an echo on one range. scroll through all of them to see whether you get an encho. My bet is that your radar was on the 8 miles range; if you had gone down to the 4, the 2 and the 1 mile ranges, you'd have seen her. The radar impulses are longer on the further ranges than on the nearer ones so that your radar was still in the transmit mode whilst the echo was coming back and thus could not receive it.

Glad you liked it,come back soon.
Not sure about the prices though . I paid e7.00 for 4 cans of pop in Flushing a couple of weeks ago which made me think that the Netherlands was expensive.

Thanks for your reply. In fact its a Raytheon RL9 with 16 miles max range. I dont know what you mean by scrolling, as far as i know i have never seen this in the manuals.
I did however -i would almost say obviously- decreased the range to the minimum but then i get all cluttering around the center of the screen.
I still have to play with gain, seaaclutter and rainclutter to see if this can be overcome. Any suggestions would be welcomed of course.

Glad you enjoyed it, Steffen

And sorry to have missed you - it would have been good to spend more than a couple of minutes with you and your partner - especially with the distraction of trying to squeeze into an unsqueezable berth.

Come again soon. There are all kinds of great places to visit, although deep(ish) draft does tend to be restrictive in this part of the world. Next time, let's meet properly. :)

Re gain -Rain and Sea clutter, try turning everything down to zero then adjust gain to begin to get a picture then tune unless it is automatic

finally bring up sea and rain too almost but not quite eliminate the clutter.Over use of sea and rain clutter will give you a razor sharp picture but will also hide small targets such as buoys yachts etc.

You need to study the manual; to see if it can be run on auto which should do most of the work for you.

Hi Vi,
Regarding squeezable berth: result of being jack..s. Had the wrong berth. For some reason thought it was 14 and it wasnt.

Perhaps we meet next year though sinde the trip went down well with SWMBO we may extend trip next year like going to Norway which is two nights at sea.
But, one never knows.
Thanks anyway for your (and everybody elses) advises in preparing for the trip. This forum is such a help and load of knowledge.

Happy sailing, Steffen
