Yes or no?

We are talking mid Atlantic using alongside Raymarine/Furuno equipment with Navionics.

Provide evidence of your YES answer if possible.

Im saying NO

A mobile (CellPhone/SmartPhone) device featured with "A-GPS" only (no additional "S-GPS"/Standalone-GPS feature to be selected as alternative, or there's no "Hybrid GPS" as a complete A-GPS/S-GPS hybrid features in one device) can work ONLY when there's internet link/connection to ISP/CNP - it is USELESS on areas with no coverage of internet link (or no BTS towers nearby, in the case on CNP service coverage area) to connect to those A-GPS servers (that usually provided by CNPs);

I'd say yes. The 3G version has a GPS receiver. Without cellphone connection, it may take a while to acquire a position. The easy way to check is to take the SIM card out and see how long it takes to find its location.

pvb is almost right. It has a full total complete and utter independent stand alone GPS chip. Every single iPad with a sim slot has one. It does not need and hardly benefits from the assisted features, try turning off cellular data and wifi and it still acquires location almost immediately even after being off for a long time.

The answer is yes. I have a ipad 2 with 3G, it has a built in GPS receiver. I have navonics loaded and use it on Scotland west coast where there is frequently no 3G connection. Navonics works seamlessly

Ok so,

I have an ipad 2 wifi version and my accelerometer and compass work on google maps. As long as i have had a wifi connection to locate my position. It works.

Now i have long thought that the 3g version does have S-GPS and thought A-GPS was position found via cellular networks without data (much like the iphone 1) the AGPS was your global position found faster with the use of data.

I was on the blower to buy one today and the sales rep said 'you can ask anyone here and all will say the same, none of the ipads have a postioning chip. The only one that does is the new iPad Air which has a GLONASS CHIP.

Remember im talking. Turn on ipad mid atlantic and use Navionics without cell etc.

You can buy a bluetooth device to give the ipad true SGPS

Compleat tosh.
I am using one now and have used it to navigate around the uk coast and deep in the Rocky Mountains with absolutely no cell or othe signals. It has a very good GPS built in.

I'll say it as well if you like. Half the reason I bought the thing!

And I will say so as well. In fact SWMBO is currently stateside bimbling around the Monument Valley area in Utah using hers to navigate with and that has no SIM in it (which is sitting on my desk here at home). I fancy the cell phone network and wireless coverage is a tad sparse over there!

Or as you got bad advice consider a Samsung tablet instead - most of them have GPS even in the cheaper wifi versions, which avoids the odd Apple design constraint

I bought it hurrah although just for all of you. I'm going to call up again and record the call as the second guy also said it does not have true GPS like you get in a Geko or Furuno. Kept going on about towers and GPS information stored on networks etc

I also bought an old Transformer as I sail across Biscay again soon and will test them out :)
