A bit of a digression (although I think the OP is now happy) but I've just bought an AIS transponder with wifi. I've had it set up in the house over the bank holiday weekend, connected by wifi to my home LAN/wifi network. What this means is that every device in the house, PCs, tablets (android and mac) now has true GPS/Glonass available instantly. No time to fix posiition required.

It's odd starting OpenCPN or NavMon and instantly having position, speed, heading etc on the screen. It will be great on the boat as the whole family will be able to use their own tablet or PC to monitor our progress. OK, they're not that excited - it's just me really!

I'll keep my GPS dongle as an emergency backup but I have seen the future and I like it!

We have a similar setup on the boat, though it's a slightly more complex system!
I have our plotter and AIS nmea outputs connected to a Raspberry Pi running Laika's Kplex software, which is in turn connected to the boat's WiFi network. All the nmea data, including GPS from either the plotter or the AIS is available to any device on the network (Including my Pebble ;) ).

Edit: Almost forgot, iPad with 3G does have standalone GPS. I've used an iPad 3 w/ 3G in the middle of a passage with no problems. :p

From my perspective it is better Value AND a much lower price. ;-)

That's probably true right now because you don't have one. Once you realise all the other things they can do the value proposition changes drastically.

On a side note, if you get the 3G version t-mobile PAYG sim cards offer a £20 every 6 months internet connection giving (I think) a gig a month fair use. I've never gone over and am a heavy web user (but don't stream video). Adding always on internet really does improve the value of the tablet even if you can tether.

We have three iPads in the family, a mini which is basically an iPad2, a 3 and an Air. The kids have an old iPad one and that's the only one you notice being slow - it's now reeeeeeeeaaaaaaaallllly slow. The 3 is the best value but the Air is a bit luverly, came free with a £36pm contract giving 8GB a month which I thought was a cracking deal, also knocked £10pm off our broadband for having two things with EE, which made it just super.

I bought my mother an iPad Air 64GB for Christmas 2013/14/15 :)) I have played with it and was certain of the GPS on the Air I would agree It is by far MUCH better. I on the other hand still have the iPad 2 wifi and two things I dont like. No 3G/GPS and 16gb was not enough. A £400 spend 2.5 years ago and now I can get the 32gb cellular for £309 is seemed like a great deal as I am currently happy with the Performance of the iPad 2.

As for Data: Yes I think from memory that is what I bought my Mother for her iPad - Great deal! Now tho on the boat I bought the all you can eat £15 per month DATA plan per month from three and send it around the boat. Last night watched an episode of Top Gear and downloaded loads of stuff for the computers about 2gb in the past 24 hours. Works well although 3 said it shouldn't. Ha we are back to those £7 per hour people who struggle with the products they sell and confuse the public as to the possibilities of the products they have on offer - hence why this thread started with the iPAd 2 3G GPS ;-)
