No correction needed. I passed commando training in 1996 and worked with and for commando forces on and off for the next 18 years. I was also on the staff at CTCRM Lympstone for three years so know a bit about it from the inside. I met a few marines who also did P company. (Usually in order to be on exchange with some particular job in airborne that needed the credibility of having done P company itself. ). You’re probably aware that if you’re commando trained you’re exempt P company as a precursor for going on your ‘jumps course’.
Anyway, there were certainly some genuinely P company qualified soldiers who failed commando training. It’s a rather different course which requires upper body strength as well as CV fitness and the usual determination and mind over matter attitude. The all arms course is brutal, and I’m glad I went through commando training by being blistered onto a recruit troop for eight months.
Putting my cheap sleight against paras to one side, my true feelings are that neither course is easy and I have a great respect for anyone who passes either commando training or p company. They’re not easy clubs to join.
I did P coy @ Aldershot in the early 80s just missing the Falklands by being 1 month too young .I was a student at the time studying at guys so did it via the TA with 144 PFA based at the Duke of York’s barracks Chelsea.Initially joining the OTC , then transferring to a infantry anti tank unit before joining the paras .
I ended up one of two UK air bourn anaesthetists , me and a regular guy .

As you say we did the parachute training alongside marines and a few SAS .There was then a mutual respect for each other I didn’t pick up on anything apart from a bit of gentle rivalry that one course paras vs marines was better / harder than the other .
We had all been through a tough course .
As you know there is a considerable amount of preparation beforehand physically etc .

We did some training with the marines down at Plymouth, various boaty antics which always resulted in us getting very wet .
I left after about 10 yrs as the jumps were getting high casualties ( we always jumped at night ) and I was away virtually every WE and my outside TA life was suffering .

I was also a keen mountaineer doing stuff like the Eiger , Matterhorn and many of the Chamonix agiles .TBO the N face of the Eiger was probably the toughest club , but it’s members are so small I did not mention it .

Yes they are both ( para red beret + marines green ) difficult clubs to join .

John how come if I don’t mention a boat in a post , I get banned or has all changed , now we have a king and a Rishi as pm , or can you mods do what you want . Just saying.
Op said “ clubs “ why assume they have to be boaty ?
If he had said yacht clubs , sailing clubs , squadrons or what ever , then I wouldn’t have mentioned the Para s and i suspect the marines would have not been mentioned either .
We messed about with canoes up the river Tamar with the marines a few times and landing craft out of HMS Raleigh .All at night .
The aim of every joint exercise from the marines pov was to get us wet , in the drink .They succeed.

There’s a policy of not entering into discussions about moderation. I’m loathe to start such a discussion now, but what I will say is that I cannot believe for one moment that you were banned for the reason that you’ve given. You’ll have to PM me or email admin to get a proper explanation.

Royal Military Police - when we came up against the hard nuts in the Paras and the Marines, we had to be harder still!
