I want to learn more about maintaining my engine and as such can anyone recommend a course for diesel engines for people with very little knowledge of mechanics. I am moored in Lymington so as near to there as poss would be good.

Thanks

Simon

Unless you're like me and reading / learning from a set of written material is worse than useless.... I also NEED some short practical experience. I'm up for the same courses, are the colleges any good?

Why? I'm not writing cheques ?

I did day skipper practical and theory and this covered basic maintenance but when it comes to changing the impeller at sea then it would help if I have done it a few times on a dummy engine (someone elses!), that goes with bleeding the fuel system as well. I also looked over the shoulder of an engineer for the day last time my boat was serviced but at the end of the day you need to actually do it yourself and I don't want to wait until I have a problem.

There are a number of RYA approved centres around but if anyone knows a good one.........

hi the coarse mentioned is very basic and will through pictures identify the parts of a diesel engine, you could then look at a diesel engine and identify the various parts, and how to say bleed the fuel system...when at sea.
Most colleges do some sort of car /lorry maintenance courses that will be cheaper becouse than anything to do with marine seems to double the price.
cheers

Shame you did not ask 3 months ago I had my boat in the Yachthaven, its still there, Princess 388 Ixonia, anyway I shall be working there at the end of September so if say 4 or 5 people want to learn a bit and ask questions I might be able to offer some sort of help on a casual basis, with no strings attatched etc, show you what what, on your Nimbus or preferably larger boat with easier engine acess, could do a service with you all perhaps, so it looks real!, if anyones interested send me a private message.
