but there are other people just as qualified as you that have just as relevent views on various subjects and just because you dont agree with them doesnt mean to say that you have to put them down with "here we go again"

Originally my post was in that light and I think fair and advised no problem ..... another chose to open the field wider ..... why should I stand back and let others play !!!!
Anybody for tennis ????

Bilge Keelers get up further ! I only came - cos they said there was FREE Guinness !
We have red diesel in France: it is as you said same spec as gasoil with a
dye. It is sold on garage forecourts ostensibly for heating or other non-automotive
use (stationary engines). You have to fill in a form when you buy it (in jerrycans or tanks) so "they"can track you down if they doubt your eventual use. Commercial
boats can use red hence the BP barge on the Rhone at Lyon. At present gasoil
(in France) costs about 70% of unleaded petrol: the red stuff is about 50%. And
Le Gouvernement needs all the money it can get (it will be well spent OR: it
will be, well, spent).
Kermit is spelt: GRENOUILLE (as in "cuisses de grenouilles").
P.S. The red stuff (for the benefit of those who want to chance their arm) is
called F.O.D. (Fuel oil domestique).
(€uros) Material costs Special taxes VAT 19.6% Total
98 octane unleaded petrol 0.159 0.590 0.147 0.806
Diesel 0.142 0.370 0.101 0.613
Red Diesel Fuel-oil dom 0.151 0.079 0.046 0.276
( In the draft this was neatly set out in a table ! You need to imagine 4 columns)
Costs have risen by about 20% since then. However the point that I want to make is that the big difference is in the special taxes of which the TIPP (excise duty) represents approx. 95%. I would definitely not recommend anybody fooling around with the French Customs or they might find that their boat is confiscated. A work colleague lost his brand new Volvo car by trying to take 'short cuts'. I ealize that there is the burden of proof but if the refuelling barge is being observed.... (The person who lost his car was engaged in polite conversation in a motorway café by an 'admirer' of the car who got him talking casually about it).
Incidentally the TIPP is modulated when there is a raw material price change of more than 10%. When prices rise over the 10% the TIPP is reduced accordingly. The converse is true for a raw price reduction of more than 10%.
Re your piece about your friend and the "casual" conversation; this is exactly how the Spanish customs are operating at the moment finding liveaboards to TAX.
as you have probably seen a few weeks ago on tv, plonkers in south wales have found out that their diesel engined cars will run on cooking oil, which is significantly cheaper than road fuel. local super marts were astounded by amount being sold
however
what said plonkers dont realise is that vegetable oil oxidises to produce a hard rubbery residue (have a look at a deep fat fryer which uses veg cooking oil ie rapeseed) (this is the basis of how old fashioned paint works by the way, oxidising
to produce a hard finish.)
now it may be cheap to burn but the complete fuel system from tank to injector will soon start to clog up with oxidised oil, especially in the hotter parts of the fuel sytem.

just as a matter of idle curiosity - and with no intention of using the info - just what red dye is used and how do ruthless and dishonest people go about removing it?
