Problems help

Have just returned from a week sailing the Med and am now totally depressed and want to sail away but have some questions:
1. How much will we spend a day
2. Is the G & T allowance calculated per day, week or month
3. What do we do with kids ( 6 & 4 years)
4. Should we just cruise the West Coast of Scotland or go further afield
5. How do we fund the purchase of the boat

Please help almost all suggestions welcome.

Oh dear. Will attempt to answer your questions honestly:

1) 10% more than your available income
2) Per hour
3) Farm them out to a sweat shop, to reduce the gap at (1) above. Chimney sweeping is coming back into fashion.
4) Depends on how much you like rain. And midges.
5) Dependent on your socio/economic category: (a) bank robbery or (b) fraud.

Hope this helps /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

1. How much will we spend a day
as much as you want & more than you can afford
2. Is the G & T allowance calculated per day, week or month
if you can last a month on a G&T you're not related to any sailor I know
3. What do we do with kids ( 6 & 4 years)
sell them
4. Should we just cruise the West Coast of Scotland or go further afield
if you were depressed after returning from mediterranean climate, how are you likely to feel after a few months in scottish waters?
5. How do we fund the purchase of the boat
see 3

but if you want sensible answers, have a scan through the liveaboard forum ;-)

1) Nothing. You will refuse to admit any expenditure is boat related only.
2) Allowance suggests rationing of gin which simply does not occur on a boat
3) Attach treble hooks and tow at more than 6kts. I am reliably informed these are then called muppets.
4) Where is this place? Is it in the Solent?
5) Sell your wife, if not enough try selling your soul.

OR:-

Decide what capital you have, give up ALL other activites, tell the kids it is part of their education, make your own wine & beer to economise on gin, sail wherever there is water deep enough and within normal weekend driving range then see how it goes. Whatever you do you must be TOTALLY dedicated and single minded, all friends and relations must be advised that weddings, birthdays and anniversaties can only be celebrated out of the sailing season and clear of the fitting out season. Kids must NOT be in any school sport teams, interested in horses or any non sailing activities unless they want to live permanently with the grandparents. Easy isn't it!

Dunno about 1,2,3, and 5, but you will definitely not find W Coast of Scotland has much in common with the Med! It has tides, it has weather - lots of it!, it has fabulous scenerey (when you can see it), but much of the time it lacks that one factor that makes the Med special - Hot sun!

After 50 years mssing about in boats I am still surprised at the difference between a pleasant F5 on a sparkling day and a solid F4 in driving rain!

1) Can't do it by the day 'cos of seasonal/one-off costs - £10,000 a year should be comfortable
2) By the month or even year if you want to a) live and b) remain inside £10,000
3) Sell them and buy a good generator(s) (wind/solar/diesel or combination). Seriously, young kids seem to adapt to the cruising life quite well. Education can be maintained through correspondence courses. There is quite a global village of cruising families which you will quickly identify along the popular routes through the Med and Caribbean. Your children will soon make friends in this community. I have no personal experience of this but have it on good authority.
4) Visit by all means but sail away before winter (ie September)
5) See 3). Seriously, if you consider raising funds by selling your house, do buy something smaller so you have a place to come back to in emergencies and stay on the property escalator

Re: You think you\'ve got problems..

Quite right! All sorts of fascinating mud creeks like Ashlett Creek, Eling, Canvey Island, Hole Haven. I think we can safely guarantee never seeing Mirabella V there.

Now think about where Mirabella can get to that you can't. Just a load of boring tropical paradises like BVI, Tahiti, Whitsunday Islands, Maldives.

There. You feel better already ... don't you! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Re: You think you\'ve got problems..

Yeah, I bet those poor b*****s sunning themselves in the Carib would love to be tucked up behind the pylons in Eling right now.

If we really did need a bit of boredom we could fly out umpteen times a year, and buy a new AWB, each time and still have change left, out of what M5 cost, after about 50 lifetimes.

You know very well that this can't sensibly be addressed without detailed knowldge of exactly how much loot you have got in the bank, in the house, and everywhere else.

If kids ar six and fourt then you could easily sail away and they might possibly learn much more out of school than in - though you would need to consider putting them in school a bit during termtime for footie fun etc.

I read a fair bit into your "shall we just crusie the west coast of scotland..." and it seems you fancy sailing a bit, rather than a whole lot. Maybe. Otherwise you would already be charting your way to the med and beyond? In which case, swap the cars for jalopies, extend a house mortgage and blow the lot on a forty footer, whilst keeping the job.

Note that only bits of an extended crusise are as trouble-free as renting a sailing boat in the med for a week - no maintenance, no ownership, no worries. You could do that a bit more.

If you really really wan to sail - you'll do it. Burning several grand on med sailing hols - you must already have the loot - or some loot?

more info needed, i think.

<<Have just returned from a week sailing the Med and am now totally depressed and want to sail away but have some questions:>>

<<1. How much will we spend a day>>

All depends on how expensive your tastes are: I know several Brits who are living on the OAP of £86 week and are able to come back twice a year to see friends/relations in UK, and save for the most expensive single item, repairs and maintenance of the boat.
To maximise income:-
1. Avoid marinas - anchor most nights
2. Eat out occasionally - say once a week.
3. Shop in markets not supermarkets and eat local produce not expensive imports.

<<2. Is the G & T allowance calculated per day, week or month>>
If you must drink G&T be aware that local gin tastes like hair-pomade and tonic is comparitively pricey - much better to drink local wine, kinder to liver as well as purse.

<<3. What do we do with kids ( 6 & 4 years)>>
Become a New Zealand citizen - they have the best distance learning courses for 2ary schoolchildren of any country, provided as a matter of course, all you have to do is supply a good e-mail connection. Meanwhile you or wife will have to become a pedagogue - suggest a PGCE/primary school training and use one of the available distance learning packages (Dorling Kindersley ar a good place to start).

<<4. Should we just cruise the West Coast of Scotland or go further afield>>
For me the islands and W coast, and NW Galicia are vastly superior to the Med. Bothe are easily reached from S coast UK by passage making preliminary to school hols.

<<5. How do we fund the purchase of the boat>>
That's everyones' 1st query.
1. Sell your house and use the proceeds to buy a boat - excessively brave and imprudent, but the most direct and easy way to do it; providing you have adequate equity in the house and don't intend to resume residence in the UK.
2. Get a marine mortgage - no different to any other loan except the mortgagors have the 'comfort' of a lien on the boat. This can result in some unacceptable limitations as to cruising grounds, crewing and insurers.
3. Use a maturing insurance policy or a windfall and borrow the balance - this was what I did.
If you can't manage any of these join a boatshare syndicate - the other partners are more important than the boat IMHO.

<<Please help almost all suggestions welcome>>
If you can't manage any of the above, change jobs and save.

What???

Happilyoverforty is part of the Mirabella V equipé? What the hell is he depressed about then! Some people are never satisfied. But I can see why he needs an answer to Q5.
