That would be a great thread in its own right - "Berthing disasters we have witnessed"

I've seen a few in Mayflower, when neighbours lost control while trying to get back into their berth, usually with an adverse wind as they cut engine power. Or they were trying to reverse out of their berth, but misjudged their prop kick and ended-up in an awkward position. The best ones end-up pinned by the wind across the stern of other boats. While M'Lady and I watched from the next row of boats with a glass of wine in hand. We didn't have any popcorn.

It's never happened to us of course (cough) - at least not with witnesses to tell the tale. ;)
Do they still issue bertholders with a laminated card showing the tidal streams through the berths?

I might suggest that to Yarmouth. The marina is built across the river yar. The old river course runs right through the middle of the harbour, though nowadays you’d be hard pressed to tell. Nobody told the river though, so it still does exactly the same thing, which can be entertaining.

Getting pinned was always a concern. Loved my 3 years at the Mayflower ( and the SW in general).

I've been caught out by the river in Yarmouth a couple of times over the years. Luckily only pride hurt!

Likewise. One of them whilst towing an XOD to the crane. Not the slightest bit worried about my RIB, which is an old sh***er, though with decent motors. Antique dayboats are both fragile and apt to cause damage. Fortunately no damage apart from a black scuff, soon removed. This must be a fairly common problem, obviously Mayflower has something similar. In Yarmouth it’s the very local nature of the streams that catches you. You go from virtually still water to a 1.5kn cross current in 10m.

I am talking about people who have boats and never use them. Not Robin. Clogging up our Marinas and boat yards. I can not get a lift out till May because the yard is full of boats that are never going to sea again. What's that got to do with Robin Knox Johnson? I think I have a valid point. Why have a boat, not use it and stop enthusiasts and keen new comers from getting berths?
How do you know they are never going to sea again? How many are out having work done? Lets face it, typically people have their boats out over the winter and get back into the water for Easter. This winter has been crap for me, too cold for the yard to apply the epoxy over a shotblasted keel so my launch date is postponed by at least a week. How many others have been delayed? How many people may have had personal issues so can't go back into the water yet.

Your issue seems to be that you didn't try and get your lift organised early enough. I came out in february but booked it at the beginnig of October. I suspect many others did the same. When did you start trying to book yours?

You do not need to sell your boat to me . I have a really good boat which I use . All the people who are angry about my post must be the ones who do not use their boats. My friends are real sailors. Real sailors will not get upset with my post.
Define real sailors,

And ultimately - what is it to do with you or anyone else. If someone has a boat and they only use it for a few weeks a year then so what. Their money, Their choice. The great thing about owning your own boat is that it is available for you to use when you want to, not at the whim of some charter company. If i want to go for a day sail one evening i could. ( well not today but you get the gist)

if you want to get angry with someone then blame the Nimbys and eco nuts who campaign against every new development and stop marinas being built or who impose tough conditions on yards. What we need are more spaces.

It is so sad and annoying that so many boats are never used.Rich idiots and cowards with no guts or sailing abilities are clogging up our marinas ,moorings and boat yards. While real enthusiasts and keen new comers can not get berths. Boris and his Brexit have made things much worse. If you own a boat and do not use it. About 60%,.Consider selling your boat to someone who may use it. Consider how much safer golfing, telly and knitting are.

Jeeze! You know jack shit about danger that I wonder if you sail at all: Gruesome Knitting Impalement Uncovers Lethal Threat (-;

Maybe the boats are used when you aren't there. Also how are you defining 'use'.

Hmmm! Was not happy last summer during Blind Week to be allocated a stern to Berth (Med Style) on the leg out from the facilities 😧 Astern all the way up in a charter boat I'm not familiar with! GULP, fortunately no incidents.

The old piles with X boats on each were far more fun 😂😂😂 Yes, I am that old.

Rich idiots coming down here and spending their money, keeping the local economy thriving, spending their money in the bars and restaurants allowing locals to have work; those rich idiots spending their money on fashion accessories in local shops; bloody rich idiots coming down here and pumping their money into the area.

Just a bit of thread drift ... I can't buy a house in the area I want because all the houses are occupied by other people who don't live in them properly.

Some have 4 bedrooms but are just an elderly couple, some of them don't even have jobs in the area, so no need for a big house within commuting distance of the company I work for, and as for the people who don't have kids - what are they doing with a 4 bedroom house? These people should sell-up and give people like me, who know how to live in a house, an opportunity to get the house I want, where I want it. They should all shuffle off into retirement homes or housing elsewhere, - they clearly don't fully utilize their houses. Sell up!! Let those who want to have a bit more space and the best school catchment area have the housing.

None of them are real home owners, just clueless paying squatters blocking everyone else from the housing market.

Bah Humbug!!

... think I'll go and live on my boat in the local marina ...... noooo! ARRRGGGHH!!! 🤬 I DON'T BELIEVE IT!!! ... There are no free marina berths!!!!

Haslar also in course of building new facilities block and extra car parking spaces. Space for newbie bertholders depends I suspect on your LOA but no harm in calling up to check out .
As for the lack of movement by elderly house owners this might be due to the penal costs of moving - I suspect many elderly won’t want to pay out the stamp duty to downsize to a bungalow unless moving to a coastal location like the Isle of Wight or say a Devonian village. Just to downsize in same location holds little attraction until the day comes for the elderly to move into a Sunrise property or such like villages featured in the works of Richard O in case of interest.
