Yes that one reconstructed by QPS has been posted in various forms several times over.

There is one version that is very clear if viewed full screen from YouTube and also one with a commentary added.
The latter one is particularly interesting as it explains what is probably happening all the way through including how the bow thruster was probably used towards the end to turn the ship back towards the bay.

Thanks for the link. Enlightenment. I do like the idea that if you are going to have technology on board, why not set it up indeed to catch out human error?

Now if I could parallel park my boat perfectly 100 times out of 100, that would be something!:)

I can just imagine someone wanting to tweet what was going on & then getting trapped. It does put forums in a bit of perspective doesn't it?

... if it was going t@@4 up on Tringa or any boat(airplanes have few options, except to die well:cool:), thats the last thing I would be doing or any of the crew, but for those who move from air conditioned to air-con places, dead easy- you only have to watch the carnage on rainy or icy roads to realise that.:(

One bit of advice I picked up from helicopter survival training; spot where the nearest emergency exit is - whenever getting onto any aircraft, boat or ship -, and if things are going pear-shaped put an arm out pointing to it in case one gets submerged or in the dark.

And I find myself checking hydrostatic release systems on car ferry raft arrays for signs of neglect, painted over pins, hinges, on escape routes that might possibly affect me. Remembering which way hinged doors to outside swing..
I never know if I'm over-doing it or not, but I've had my moments of drama and don't really want any more.

A touch sensationalist IMHO. The fact is that it was not the ship that was an accident waiting to happen but the captain who was an accident waiting to happen. The ship didn't sink through any defect in it's design but because the captain drove it onto the rocks at speed. All vessels are built for a purpose and this vessel was built for the purpose of ferrying a large number of passengers around in maximum comfort; that in itself doesn't make the ship unsuitable for it's purpose. All vessels are a compromise between their purpose and their seaworthiness. For sure the CC was shallow drafted and had a huge top hamper but you could say that about most passenger carrying vessels and I don't think that in itself is reason to say that this type of ship is an accident waiting to happen

A touch? Now, that's an understatement, if I've ever seen one.

I refrained from commenting further on this thread lately, because as I said in my last post anything else which can be said without knowing the results of a proper investigation would only be a contribution to the gossip.
But now it seems to me that Der Spiegel does exactly that, in spades.
The thing sustained what was possibly one of the worst possible groundings, and gave enough time to save almost all of its passengers - in spite of some delays in ordering to abandon the ship. What else could be reasonably expected? I'm not sure a destroyer would have faired much better in the same conditions.

I worked with German companies for most of my working life, and I can say with some first hand knowledge that the word which better describes the German engineering myth is overrated.
One would expect a brand new car to overturn when tested in rapid turns if built in the People's Republic, right? Wrong, they were the Suttgart boys who managed that, for crissake.

Then again, each Country has its fair share of junk magazines, and Der Spiegel probably is the most representative of such category, for Germany.

You are so wrong, Der Spiegel is as far away from a junk magazine as you can get. If you want junk try bild.de. I have a hunch that this article will be confirmed by the official investigation.

Maybe, who knows? But even if I had any hunches, I wouldn't make a magazine article out of them.
Which surely isn't a problem for them, because by the time the official investigation will be released, they will have found some other flashy titles for their cover.
Maybe with some other spaghettis and pistols in it, considering their originality...?
If you think that isn't junk journalism, I don't know what else is.
Though I agree that Bild is another shining example.

Nevertheless there is exaggeration on somebody's part which gives Der Spiegel doubtful credibility on this report.

I recall it said the dining room was 20m underwater.. , but as I the ship drew 8m, plus a liitle more while sinking say 12m , but she was beached while still almost upright, so there's only about 15m of water where it has sunk and that dining room can't be in the bilges.

I think the crew and passengers on the CC had lifejackets, apart from those poor souls who were stuck below decks.

Just done the survey but Q1 asks if you wear an LJ at all times and if you answer "yes" you then get asked about various situations when you might wear one.

I answered "no" and didn't get these questions at all?

Doesn't seem right?
