i know the biggest warning factor of any OBM is that if there's no cooling water turn her off, but when you start up an engine and there is no CW for 3 minutes exactly everytime, is this a problem or normal for letting the engine warm up? it's a yamaha TE9.9, any help would be brilliant

Do you mean water coming out of the telltale jet (just below the cowl)? Water comes out of here on my Yamaha 9.9 as soon as the engine has started.

The water cooling pipes are narrow, and the jet has a small bore. It is common for bits to clog up these pipes, especially the jet. The connectors on mine for the cooling pipes inside are push on and clip type, and are easily removed and checked. The pipe to the inner end of the jet can alos be pulled off on my engine, and the hole cleaned by poking some wire through.

in theory the impeller driving the water intake starts with the engine so there should be no delay

I don't know that model, but at least one small yam has the cooling telltale after the thermostat, so no water 'til it's hot.

It rather worried the salesman running up a new 4hp/4T for us a few years ago, until he checked with the mechanic

yeh the cooling water jet is at the back of the cowl i know for a fact that the thermostat is before the cooling telltale jet as i have looked at the orthogarohic diagrams.
