Cool box

Take a look at this product.I ave one and its does both jobs:cool box or compressor fridge.Dont know how I ever managed before.

Nice long goDOTskimDOTresourcesDOTcom link to earn money.

Tidied up link and removed the monetising stuff in case anyone wants to check it out in Amazon.

These are a completely different beast from Peltier effect devices and are proper portable compressor driven fridges. Only problem with that is that this makes them pretty expensive (approx. £340).:D

So it's a standard useless thermo-electric jobby on 12V (which will be disappointingly uncool and chomp batteries to boot), and the compressor only works when there's mains power available. Seems the worst of both worlds. As it's about the same price as a 12V compressor coolbox what is the point of this weird neither-one-nor-the-other contraption?

A Peltier option worked well for us for years in the UK (not a patch on a proper fridge as we have now of course). But basically we filled it with frozen drinks - from coke bottles to water, and chilled drinks like beer and put perishables from the shops' fridge counter in as soon as possible after buying them, then ran the cool box whenever under motor or in a marina - and we stayed at a marina nearly every night in those days and that little boat.

Fine for keeping a cool box cool for a lot longer and it certainly made a difference compared to when it was unpowered but every few days we would need to get another bag of ice.

Angus, I had completely missed the fact that it seems to just be Peltier type on 12V, thanks for pointing that out. It certainly makes it less useful than I thought. I suppose it's useful to be able to get to a really low initial temp. using the compressor on mains. A very expensive way to do that and price is getting close to buying a DIY kit for a 12V compressor system.

I removed the link when I quoted jamestkirk because it resolves into one of these long cash generating links.

This is what the one in your post looks like (disabled here of course). I really don't link these much but just my own prejudice. :D

I had a Waeco CDF-18 on my old boat which I bought second hand. It is utterly brilliant. Pays for itself many times over in terms of not having to find a port to restock on milk etc, and the fact that you can keep fresh food, and enjoy cold wine/beer means it keeps you out the pub too and cooking and drinking in a sunny anchorage instead.
I kept it when I sold the boat, it has a 240v option too, so it's been brilliant as a patio beer cooler, on camping trips, and most importantly when my £1800 top of the range SMEG freezer decided to pack up...irreparably...during the hot summer of last year.
Worth every penny.

It is intended as a portable freezer which will get down to -15C when on 230 volt power supply but which can also be used as a cool box, getting down to 20C below ambient while being transported and connected to a 12 V DC power supplly.

A combination of a compressor fridge and a Peltier cool box which will be useful to many carvanners but probably less useful to the boat owner. Less expensive ( I think) than a portable 12 volt compressor fridge with mains adapter

It's not a portable freezer though, because it needs mains to run as a freezer which isn't available to boats or caravans on the move without faffing about with inefficient inverters. It's a portable defroster :-)

Can't see any point to it over a Waeco jobby than properly runs on 12V - fridge or freezer - or mains with the power adapter. It might be a bit cheaper, but it's overwhelmingly less useful for caravanners or boaters on the move.

I don't know how caravan fridges work as they don't make any noise but ours will work on mains, 12 v or gas and cleverly runs of the car system when the engines running.

That's an absorption cycle one which cleverly converts heat to cold using a cycle which Einstein was co-inventor of. Absorption cycle fridges are often used in hotel mini-bar fridges as they have no moving parts and run almost silently. They are less efficient in electrical consumption than compressor fridges. Although they can use gas as their heat source they are not used on boats much because they require to be very close to level to work.

And use a huge current on 12v like 10 amps virtually continually. So no good on a battery for any length of time. ol'will

I remember going caravanning in my yoof where we had a fridge called Osokool (or similar). It was made of something like plaster of Paris and had a small reservoir on the top which you topped up with water which then evaporated and cooled the contents. Not a fridge as such but stopped butter melting and milk going off. No battery required.

The Osokool was remarkably effective once one worked out the principle of how it worked. The door finally fell off ours so if you want one there is probably still one (without a door) somewhere off the Casquettes.

We are a little more responsible now.

I have used a Mobicool 29 litre cool box that cost £75 for 5 years and it is really good. Works off mains and as a cigerette lighter adapter to use with batterys. It does not use a lot of electricity. I can have it on with the kettle.I was going to fit a wind charger to keep it going when out of marinas but found I would need to spend over a thousand pound to fit one. Rutland 914i Too many other jobs this year maybe next year. This year will try keeping food in the bilges. In hot weather food can taste awful with no fridge.

You'd be better with a solar panel, turn off fridge at night and don't open the door. UK only☺️
