Coliholic Dilemma

Colin_Maslen, poster hereabouts, is considering a new boat. Ok, not a “new” boat, but a boat that will be new to him. None of my business of course, so an ideal discussion topic IMHO.

Now, his boat at the moment is on the River Ouse. It’s about 30 feet long and he’s not allowed to have a bigger one, else he’s out and anyway the flower arrangement will get spoilt under the bridges. But last year he took it to the coast, and came back by sea (I went wiv him) and a very jolly time. So he trucked it to the south coast this summer, and had an even better time cross-channel with an MBM cruise to Holland. Also, in June, he’s been proper med-boating in Sof France with us, and now proper UK-boating with jfm in the Solent, DaveS x-channel and MBM to holland.

Lots of experinece, one would have thought, enabling him to make a perfect choice for new boat in exactly the right location, and indeed a pile more experience than most people get before buying first med/sea/solent boat. Trouble is, all of these new options (bigger boat, solent, med) require him to travel a bit more than ten minutes in order to go boating, to find the sea. And since he lives in the middle of nowhere (cambridgeshire) it’s a fair distance to anything of interest, other than his boat, or um, well that’s it really. Oh, there’s Ipswich of course, which is handy for er Southwold and back.

Now what will he do? Currently his boat is for sale at a price that will also allow him to buy a helicopter and it’s been advertised in the toilet block of his local marina, so he clearly hasn’t found the Right Boat yet. He might like to buy DaveS’s ace UK boat turbo 36 but not for more eighteen quid. Now he’s been to the solent, with an offer of buying a share of a boat, but it’s 3 hours away winge winge. Should he try that? Or perhaps keep his own boat, plus a toy boat in the bath for when he can’t be arsed to drive all the way to the end of the street, plus visit other boats for fun and help us with the washing up and driving a bit, and/or rent some other boats? Or maybe buy a small share in a solent boat, like a seventh share of a Phantom on the south coast? Or is this just taking the P?

Easy for me, cos never bin in a river, and ooer looks all dodgy with nasty hard bits of land never more than 5 yards away. Much more sensible (well, less stupid) to see a Great Divide between river and sea boating, than yottie and power. How did others choose river over sea, or do they live halfway between, I wonder? And more important (in kilroy accent) “Howdja Feee-ull, howdja Feee-ull, about river or sea, uh? And whadjou think re-ully, that colin should do? Hm? Yes you, no not him sitting next door, you, yes you reading this? ”

Awaiting consensus of views with baited breath from the wise ones hereabouts <G>. Leastways at least in know where my boat is unlike oldgit who seems to think Malaga is on Majorca;-)

Not only is Colin in thie dilemma but so am I , after years of river ditching, then 2 years in Majorca, hasten to add with a boat that spent more time broken down than in those glorious bays that we all dream about, we returned to the Solent with the med boat, this done for reasons of cost and the logistics that go with , plane rides, kids holidays etc, exspensive flights etc.

Anyway here we are moored in the Solent, what a great place, nowhere in this area could beat it,BUT, as we all know things are never going to get any cheaper in fact the opposite, the main downside for me is where we live, about 60 miles northwest of poor old Colin, hence 3.5 hours and 210 miles of traffic everytime we want to see the boat, what I say to you Colin is, think very carefully before moving the boat , or buying that all exspensive dream boat.
By the way mines for sale next year possibly with a Lym mooring.

Me fingers have gorn all doddery and the keys that spell OLDGIT are ever so close to those that spell BOATONE and it was a misstipe and I GOT IT WRONG and do hereby humbly apolgise.

Grovel grovel sorry sorry, etc etc. Send me your address and a bottle of Balvenie will wend its way to you (or maybe that was a mistype too and it'll be Lucozade or Typhoo).

All of this was no problem to me. Boat mad mate died at 52 and I said stuff it.I'm having what I want.
Wifey all upset. But what the hell I earned it and spent errr a little bit of it.
Tried a bit of the rivery suff, but cant do with that. Unless Cornwally riverish which is great fun just to zoom up and toddle about a bit and zoom back to the sea when its got less of a tanterum on.
Funny how sea and wife seem to have the same opinion.
On bad days there orible but on good ones there brilliant.
Any more thoughts on this topic??

Can't beat a bit of variety - 'er indoors likes the river, but is not averse to the big blue a couple fortnights a year, so long as I dont make it rough (always my fault!!).
Hence the Upper Thames, not too far from Cambridge actually, and only a day's jog down to the Tideway. Best of both worlds, but got the dreaded BSSC coming up this year so may be I'll be down the Solent anyway !!

There's more than Southwold to cruise to from Ipswich - but don't tell everyone else we'll get all those Solenty, Breton be-capped pillocks with more money than sense moving in.

Just outside the estuary is Walon Backwaters, then Brightlingsea, West Mersey and the delights of the Blackwater. After that, the Crouch and a trip up the next estuary to a small place called London! Any marina on the Orwell or Blackwater could suit him down to the ground (well mud really).

I had 5 happy years at a swinging mooring at West Mersey and 6 happier years at Tollesbury before relocating for work.

I got sick of commuting to the boat so have now found a cosy private finger berth with water & power only 12 miles from home! Bliss again! I recommend mooring as close to home as possible. You b*gg*rs can keep your Solent with it's traffic jams - wouldn't mind the med mind you but I'm not rich like Matt S!

Don't despair Trev.,
I was with a snr Env. Agency official the other day who tells me the goal posts are moving yet again, I wasn't quite sure what he was saying but it seemed to add up to that if your Insurance Company accepted the way the boat is then so will they. I wonder if with all these changes they are relaxing all the crap but doing it a bit at a time to save face.

No rebates I'm afraid not even for that poor little old lady I met who had spent £1,500 getting her Shetland 535 through it. When I looked she had been ripped off right left and centre, the yard had even charged her £120 lift out.... lift out? for what reason? £120? I can get my Princess 435 done for that. £1500? for what? what the hell needs doing on an outboard boat that comes to that amount. They had frightened her half to death with the nonsense they had fed her.

Re: Coliholic Dilemma - Solution

If Colin gets the most versatile boat ever he will be able to have his cake and eat it. Does anyone remember that Caraboat? It was adv in the boatie mags in the mid 1970s. A 16foot caravan that floats, if I remember you retract the towbar and stick an outboard on the back. It had no side decks but a verandah at one end. Anyway, perfick for Colin eh? He can use it on the Ouse, then trail it to Solent and who cares if journey takes 4 hours because stop in layby and make tea and ham rolls, launch it at Beaulieu public slip or something, then to SofF in summer and cruise in company with matts. Massive accommodation probably bigger than a T36 inside. No prob if go aground as the wheels are there permanently, just level her up with the jockey wheel. Anyone still got a mag from the 70s with pics of this baby?

Just looked on google - full website www.caraboat.com

In fact come to think of it, Colin's been quietly eyeing these up for ages hasn't he, why else would he have made that post a couple of months back asking who made diesel outboards? Come on Colin, 'fess up to the BB :)

Wonder what is the biggest outboard it will accept,
Can you imagine it with a 300hp Mercury?

Ooh yes, twins please! Mental image of water version of those banger races where the last race of the evening is a touring caravan race, they all turn over and finish up a pile of plywood and insulation, we took kids once and they laughed themselves silly!
