had on his bow, a white 3D circle , with Little black crosses on, any one know what it means, I guessed something to do with racing !!!!!

Ah, this was recently introduced into the 2005 revision of the IRPCS.

"Rule 30
(g) A vessel of more than 12 metres in length, when underway, making way and anchored shall be required to exhibit by day a white sphere forward with 8 black crosses spaced at regular intervals about its circumference. The sphere must be located no less than 1.5m below the level of the vessels sidelights. By night the vessel must show a flashing green light as near as practicable to the location of the day shape. Vessels navigating in this condition will be considered to be restricted in their ability to manoeuvre."

It serves to further confuse all those who, sat at home with their books, still can't agree on the interpretation of the Regs. Let alone those on the water who have a minute to make a decision as well as all the other things they are keeping an eye on.

Futile.

In the cold light of day, after an incident it can be brought to play to determine blame.

If you mean the powerboat, could it be an incorrect indication of a bow thruster prop?

"In the cold light of day, after an incident it can be brought to play to determine blame. "

Couldn't agree more.

How many of the present signals are visible and capable of prompt interpretation at a distance which is sufficient to take appropriate action without the use of binoculars which on a small boat in all but the smoothest of seas is no easy feat.

How many boats permanently display a variety of signals which are there so that when a problem does occur they are on the right side of the law ?

How many signals are carried in this manner because the crew time is not available to display them correctly as they are too time consuming to deploy ?

The semaphore signal used on motor vehicles was made redundant many years ago as it was not capable of giving a satisfactory signal on today's roads. It was replaced by a flashing light which can be more rapidly seen and interpreted. The same cannot be said of far too many marine arrangements.

Too much of the present system of various combinations of coloured lights balls cones and flags which has grown over decades is complex and far from being intuitively interpreted. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Powerskipper wouldn't do anything like that. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Is an anchor ball significantly different from a radar reflector hung in the rigging ?

I checked wiv the RYA and there has been (according to them) no change in the ColRegs. They have no idea what the discribed signal means!
I asked because a committee boat that we use is 13.7 mtrs LOA and would fall into the described "rule".
Their answer was "what, pardon, say again"?

If you have any additional info then I would be pleased to hear it!

Peter.
