Here is my project. Storebro Solo, she's called Seachaser and I'm in the middle of restoring her to her classic style. I'm knee deep in varnishes and sand paper at present and if anybody has any good tips for me I'd love to hear, other than "Bloody wooden boat mate, your mad!" cos I've had that one quite a few times allready along with "do you want a light?"

Well done on the Storebro Solo, I've always liked those.

I like the looks too, and compared to the Smart is down right sexy! In fact, everything about this boat seems (can't say for sure) better than the Smart. :)

Hmm nice. I am looking at a Super Swordsman. So any thoughts on Faireys? They seem to be good value at the moment, lots of owners "keen to sell" in the parlance of brokers!

One or two superswordsman have had vast sums spent on them, which is unlikely to be re-couped.....you might equate that to good value.

The Swordsman do tend to be kept in better order, I think they are owned by those with a little more to spend than say the Huntsman or Huntress.

Swordsman dont have the sporty feel of the smaller boats, but do have a lot more space on board, a Super Swordsman I should think is pushing on 7 tonnes of boat.

The Fairey Owners Club events are great fun if your on the South Coast. Much Pimms, Gin and jollification!

I'd say the Fairey market is almost stopped right now, very few changing hands and quite a choice for sale. Worth talking to a few of those in the know, Pete Foulkes, Martin Mitchell, Gordon Currey etc. If you want to know about the provenance of a particular boat then AVB (Alan Burnard, in his office most days, gentlemens hours, about 10 to 12 and 1 to 3 each day) is the man to ask.

If you need one surveyed get someone practical on board, Pete Foulkes will tell it how it is.

Generally, compare to other wood construction methods the Fairey boats are little bother.

In a Super Swordsman you'd at least want a healthy pair of 210's to push it along.
For engineering assessment speak to Mike Wills in Poole.

Hope this helps.

You wouldn't regret it.

Ive been talking to Gordon Currey, is it true that to be involved with Faireys you have to be a real character? Most people regard me in that category so I should fit in if that's the case! I have seen a Huntsman that was comissioned by Bill Cadbury, son of the chocolate person.... That needs too much work. Seen a Super Swordsman that is pretty good on modern engines. You are right about the market as offers at about 60% of the original price are usually taken seriously. I will keep you posted.

Ah yes, Gordon, nickname Woggy, nice chap, absolutely barking!

Often Fairey boats come on the market when the owner has had enough, usually by that time maintenance has started to slip, might be on the market a year by which time its looking quite rough, expectations of sale price might be much higher in the seller's opinion and hence the boat hangs around unsold getting more down at heel. I can think of one H28 that very clearly shows this.

H31 are about the best of the bunch if you need 2 cabins. Mostly well kept and not many built.

If one cabin is enough, buy a cheapo spearfish or Spear. Gordon does a good line in converting Spears to Spearfish.

Join the club, put a wanted on the forum, we dont bite. You never know.

Going to see a Super Swordsman next week with Gordon. That should be an entertaining day out! Do you have any knowledge of Dell Quay Ranger 36's? I have seen one for a very sensible price with 300hp Sabres etc.... Not a boat I have seen much of, although I do believe there is a tenous connection with Fairey? Or am I talking rubbish! BTW the boat in question doesn't have contra rotating props, any comments on this as it sounds a bit scary to me with a total of 600hp behind them!

Fairey sold some 27ft hull shells to Dell Quay which were fitted out as Rangers, I think other than that no link to Fairey for the 36.

Very few Fairey boats run contra-rotating motors, its no bother at all, just always park one way!

Say hi to Gordon for me. He calls my boat 'dad's old boat', his father raced mine to Torquay and won a pot when she was new in 67. His fathers lucky number was 3, hence the race numbers on her.

Good luck with the Super Swordsman, which one is it?

Easy way to include pictures into your post

Well. . . .I have spent 3 valuable hours of my life trying to get pics on the screen. I have Image shack and Photo bleedin bucket , but NOTHING . . . .SO. . . .I give in.
If you want pics you'd better email me. This is the END !!!!

The easiest way to post a picture is straight from your computer. As you are entering your post just scroll down to 'manage attachments' and you can take whatever picture(s) you want direct from whichever folder it's in.
Hope this helps, Stu
