Some of you may or may not be aware of the disasterous fall to earth of my dream to circ around the world with the boyfriend of another person on this site. Since that dreadful day of realisation, I have been inundated with offers of a berth upon boats from as far away as Liverpool and Lebanon.
These skippers regret the fact that I was duped and have all vowed to be straight up from the start.
I have decided to sail with a fellow called Jerry Eden. He has assured me that he has gazillions of experience under his wet-weather gear and I can't wait to meet him.
Hopefully, this one won't have a significant rudder waiting in the wings as back-up.
Oh, I am so happy!

quick straw poll

sorry to put a damper on your enthusiasm but i think you're asking for trouble if you're going sight unseen into a 2+year voyage with one guy. from your previous posts i assume you're thinking in terms of a purely skipper/crew relationship.

call me a cynic but i don't believe that can work. i won't itemise the possible scenarios but those that involve an enjoyable and successful circumnavigation are not very likely, indeed the only ones i have ever heard of have been couples who have formed a relationship before setting out. my advice would be to go as a member of a larger crew. and yes, i have crossed oceans with a variety of attached and unattached women as well as reading a lot of other peoples' accounts.

what does the committee think?

(yes, maybe i should mind my own business but she did post it for all to see/comment)

Re: quick straw poll

I dont want to be a doomsayer either and dont wish to dampen Marias' enthusiasm.
I totally agree with you! I wouldnt sail out of the harbour with anyone, who I didnt know for quite a while! The guy or girl, might be a raving bloody lunatic! In fact you would have to be a lunatic to accept this kind of scenario! The atlantic is big the pacific even bloody bigger. The guy may have a zillion miles experience, where and with who? Its a recipe for disaster or worse and I do Hope Maria, who has already been let down badly, thinks a little more and deeply about this. Careful girl, you should know what you are letting yourself in for. Like snowy there, I have sailed extensively with a variety of woman, unattached and otherwise.

I too should maybe mind my own business, but............

Maria

This guy sounds like really bad news, see about Jerry Eden to read all about him.

Sorry, but he doesn't appear to be someone you should associate with. Time to think again?

Best wishes
Tom

Seems this guy is a legend in his own lunchtime for all the wrong reasons. See this:

Best avoided!

Re: quick straw poll

What's wrong with several trips with several people before you make your mind up? You might even find that sailing, when out of sight of land, is not for you yet. But added to the problems of social and domestic interaction it could put you off sailing forever. Try crewseekers and the Cruising Association they put you in touch with enough skippers to make an informed decision. If it goes wrong you've only got to worry about a wasted holiday.

That is if you want my opinion, no one else does.

Nice one, Lifeatsea. Jerry Eden's name has cropped up here before: former poster JAX Ashby reported an experience of sailing with him, some years back. Eden has attracted an extraordinary amount of adverse criticism from yachtsmen who've sailed with him - see for example this 7-knots thread. The real mystery is that for one who seems to have taken part in so many failed voyages, how he has managed to learn so little! Maybe he's like our own grandstanding Eric Abbott?

How did you come across him? Have you met him personally?
