some years ago the husband of a colleague told me, in the pub, about his boat, which we discussed at some length.

a couple of days later i asked the colleague what their plans were for the next trip. her reply was 'we've never had a boat, he was just winding you up'.

i've never managed to figure out what he got out of spinning me the line, it seems an odd way of getting your jollies.

Apologies, Snow.
However, this was a necessary thread because I believe that the person who mislead me over his boat and his circ, deserves to suffer for at least one week for the lies and deception that he offered in exchange for my genuine and sincere interest.
It's hard having to come to the UK, instead of being able to visit some as yet undiscovered destination.
Really hard!

However, sometimes wind-ups can be a scream. I remember sitting next to 2 young Japanese blokes on a plane heading to Cambodia. I noticed them reading a guidebook on Angkor Wat. I leant across the aisle and tapped one of them lightly on the arm. In Japanese, I asked them if they were planning on going to Angkor. 'Hai', they enthusiastically replied.
'Oh', I continued, 'Don't you know that the ruins are closed until 2006 for rennovations?'
You should have seen their faces drop. This was their big end-of-graduation trip to see 'the world' before entering a life of work until death.
Of course, after a few minutes I let them know that I was just kidding, but it was still worth the wind-up.

Should I take this seriously? Somehow, Eden has got wind of this thread and is threatening me with a lawsuit for libel!
He tells me that all the other people, one guy in particular, who have been intent on ripping his career to pieces, are also going to be on the end of his. to quote,' very powerful attorney'!
Crikes! What have I done! I was only joking but he sounded really pissed off.

Re: Once bitten ...

Rather, it sounds like a lady of your non-aquaintance, had a lucky escape. If a man who plans to sail around the world with another woman, whilst he is in a steady relationship with another woman, who is also considering the Big Leap, needs a lucky escape from a person who was so genuinely trustworthy of his words and his encouragement that she cancelled her 'real' travel plans for a quick stint in the UK, her home country and not one of her favourite choices for a vacation, well, if that gentleman had a lucky escape, then I quite wonder where you base your judgement from.
I was the innocent victim in this tangled web of insincerity, lies and empty promises. The guilty parties are keeping a low profile, and for very good reason. Still, although unable to change my ticket for the more exotic climes of Mongolia or Dakar, I have instead been able to extend the stop-over in Hong Kong to 12 days out of the entire 16. A nice balance and leaves me enough time to stock up on extra-slim tampax!

Re: Once bitten ...

Dear LifeAtSea,
A week has now passed since the realisation that you are stuck with going to the UK this Yule. You have just arrived on your boat and Kobe is beckoning you to go out and do a bit of exploring of new territory. You should therefore shut down this lap-top and let sleeping dogs lie.
This is the end of your first experience with dodgy skippers.
It was fun.
Ja ne
