If I leave Cherbourg at Chbg HW -1 roughly what height can I expect at the sill at Dielette? Just wondering if its a no-brainer or marginal for 2.25m draught..

Thanks - would work it out myself but charts etc all on the boat!

many thanks

... back to the OP.

My charts/almanac on the boat too, but a couple of bits of info:

Cherbourg to Dielette is about 25 nm.
HW Dielette is over 1 hour earlier than HW Cherbourg. (More like 1 hr 20).

Leaving Cherbourg at Chbg HW -1 should give you the greatest chance of good conditions through the race, but you won't get much help from the tide, so I would presume the best passage time would be 3 1/2 - 4 hours for a fast boat. That would mean arriving at Dielette after half tide, when the sill would have shut.

But, you should still have enough water the get through the outer harbour into the Basin de Commerce, where there are a couple of pontoons you can tie up to until the marina sill opens once again.

Actually, the weekend started out to be a major disappointment as the wind on Friday backed to about 210, as we attempted to sail to Cherbourg so the decision was taken to head for Yarmouth, do France another time, on the basis that any fool can be uncomfortable.

However, as we sat aboard on Sat afternoon, in Yarmouth, Mr DJE came tapping on the hull, later that evening after a pleasant meal in the only real pub left in Yarmouth (kings Head) we raided Close Encounter and were then taken by DJE to raid another poor unsuspecting boat, friends of theirs. Sunday Mrs DJE with others, joined us at Bucklers Hard, Mrs DJE sending poor DJE off home to do the patio!! Sunday PM Fireball turned up, who we joined for a cuppa, on his exclusive up river buoy. Sunday evening was a very pleasant meal, with 6 of us around the table aboard Galadriel, only to be brought to an early close when we ran out of wine!!

So, what had started out to be a huge disappointment, in fact turned out to be a great weekend, with even a reasonable sail back to Chi.
