To keep the batteries topped up, I too, use solar panels. I have a 5 watt & a 15 watt that I leave connected when the boat is not in use. Because they are rigid I do not carry them whilst cruising as they take up too much room.

From the posts here it sounds like my best bet is to trade in the current, only two year old Alternator, for a new one, re-make all the connections & try again.

My boat is moored up a twisty creek & I find the amount of engine I generally use in navigating this is sufficient to keep the batteries charged. I find I get used to this comfort factor so when the Alternator started playing around I got a little nervous.
