Anyone know a good source for a mains - 24v charger for home use? Cheap & chearful is fine.

Alternatively, can I use a normal 12V type and charge each 12v battery separately. Gut reaction is that this is a bad idea since they may not get exactly the same charge. If you charge both in series, then each battery gets exactly the same charge. However, thinking about it, if you charge each separately for long enough they will both be 100% charged anyway.

Not quite, in theory. The charging rate will depend on the internal resistance, which varies a bit from cell to cell but if you have a clever charger that goes to trickle charge at full voltage then you can leave it on until both are well charged, then it'll work. Although with twice the capacity it'll be slower to charge. Even C&C Halfords chargers come with this facility these days.
