Changing a boats name, good or bad thing to do ?

I have always changed boat names and am still alive and so far I haven't sunk.

Sometimes the name just doesn't suit the Boat or new Boat owner. We changed the last name from "Rosie" to "Out Out" it's a much better name for us.

We changed the name on three of our boats and kept the names on the other three. All driven by whether or not we liked the name or had something preferable in mind. The current boat name was disliked by both of us initially but it grew on me and it has remained - not sure that SWMBO ever actually agreed or just gave up! ?

Yes, quite sure thanks...As for history, a name change doesn't destroy history, it adds to the story. Would you not paint your house for fear of destroying it's history?

So there are 8 Billion ish people in the world and I suspect a couple of Billion or more believe in Superstition..... But you know it is Nonsense . Well done you. Shall I tell those 2 Billion they are wrong or shall I leave that to you.

The Name of a Boat is how you track its history not by the paint you might put on a house

I've changed the name of my last two boats, the name of my current boat had been changed twice before I bought her and I changed it again.
If you look at my avatar, the boat is still floating 17 years down the line.

But that looks like a Sail boat...... The Bad luck has already happened........ You have a sail boat ;)

No need for the sarcasm, it doesn't do you any favours...

So when on the Radio you say Out Out Out......... Is that ever a problem

Mine was called Miss Miami. All well and fine in her glory days when she could twerk and strut her stuff with all the gloss and brightwork on show. But at 30 years of age it just made her sound like a sad old spinster.

We had a boat a few years back that was called "Free As Air". It was done as a big stylised decal down each side of the hull. We thought that it was an awful name but we knew the guy and didn't want to hurt his feelings when we saw him on the water. Reluctantly we kept the name.
Our current boat came with no name and we spent ages trying to find something that we both liked. In the end we went fora nice sounding simple name "Sula". It's the gannet genus, we love watching them dive.

My first boat was originally called Spectrum Too and was one of two Cox and Haswell 33s, with the sister ship called Spectrum One. The previous owner had changed the name to Nereids Nod and I had no hesitation in changing it back. However the Part 1 registration was an issue because Spectrum Too had by then been taken so I had to add "of Poole" (where she was registered) which was fine. My next boat was called "Grebe" to which we added "Little" as Little Grebe seemed more appropriate for the size and design of the boat.

My current boat was originally "Liz of Lymington" but when I bought her she had "Zola of Lymington" on her stern. In fact her name had been changed on the Part 1 Register to just Zola and she is registered in Southampton so that is what she now has on her stern.

Other boats I have owned in the time have missed out on renaming, and I cannot say that this has resulted in any better outcomes.

I am sure that anything that has gone wrong over the past 20 boating years is attributable to many other factors rather than the name changes.

I nearly changed the name of my present boat as it was distinctually masculine, convention is to refer to a boat in the feminine ie she, her etc or none gender. He has had his name from new, 30 years ago so I never changed it. Funny when someone says something like "have you had her long?" I just point out it's a male boat, always creates a bit of a laugh. :)

If you can change the name and hide the new name with the new decals go for it.
If you can’t don’t bother as you’ll never polish it out!
I’m sure Neptune wouldn’t really mind so long as pour a drop of the hard stuff over the side ;-)

My first and only boat was originally commissioned by an accountant. He named it literally what it was: Tax And Liability Insurance Paid. (TALIP) I kept it , sounds good I think.
