Chain Jamming

The chain passing through the Simpson Lawrence capstan keeps jamming before the hawse pipe. Whilst the chain is middle aged it looks ok. Any suggestions for a cure?

A traffic cone does wonders,

fit it below decks above the chain locker it helps to guide the cable down and provides a jam free route.

either is isn't the right size for that winch (not the diameter but the link size) or it's catching on the guide in some way I suggest.
Has it ever run smoothly on that windlass?

The problem is intermittant, usually happening when inconvenient. The links fail to come off the gipsy and two of them jam together by the stripper. The only way to release them is by loosening the top clutch plate.
