CAUTION when buying from a broker

Of course not.

Of course I'm not opposed to your suggestion, I do all of it voluntarily anyway and have a very good reputation for it. I can't do any more because it doesn't exist. What are you trying to imply about me?

How many brokerage offices have you ever worked in?

There is no room for bad brokers, but your postings need to consider the effect you may have on the good ones.
 
In my own opinion, glynny has had a bad Experiance, and in my opinion I'm not surprised it was with b@*tshed.

B@*tshed are essentially a franchise are they not? They sell 100s of boats.

My first boat I listed with them was a waste of time. I asked if I could advertise myself as I needed the money fast for my current boat. I got a laugh but essentially I was allowed to. I rang up to see what was going on after one week and he said no interest. The following week I sold privately informed the nice man at b@*tshed and left it at that. Blow me two weeks later I was getting calls from the broker with offers on the table! Even though I rang him up and said it sold two weeks prior.

The point being b@*tshed deal with so many boats they don't know if they are coming or going. Again, my own opinion.

In fairness to jonic (correct me if I'm wrong) he has no more than 15 boats on his books at a time, he has the tender touch of one on one. He specialises in liveaboards and he has been one, so Experiance is vast.

Jonic is a true broker that knows what he's talking about.

If I was you I would take it as Experiance, I did with my experiences from the alleged company and I simply won't use them again. Buying or selling. So in the end they have lost out with my potential monies.

Nope. The only sweeping generalization on this thread did not come from me did it? I said to you earlier we are on the same side, and I meant it. I feel as strongly as you do, perhaps even stronger.

As to choice of broker a good starting point would be to see if they are members of ABYA here.

You had a problem with a specific boat and a specific broker.

I don't know if the organization you had issues with are members.

Unless the website has been altered it looks as if a full stop has appeared from space. Above is your original post. Below is the website quote (providing its same boat) pasted from jonics link

"She looks lovely but could do with a little TLC below to make her a great little boat ready to sail away."

That changes the sentence completely, and as I read the website the boat needs tlc before she sails away.

I'm not saying you have not been mislead, I have had bad dealings myself with the said company.

But that's a bit naughty quoting things that are not true, unless of course the full stop has been removed from the website

Maybe they have all PMd the OP - just as he says 196 unknown disenchanted people have!

One sided accounts of negative experiences (however real, and whatever subject) rarely get very far as there is little constructive to comment on without hearing the other side.

Many brokers are members of the BRA (as is the one that is the subject of this thread). ABYA tends to attract individual independent brokers such as John, BRA represents a wider constituency including dealers who buy and sell on their own account. You can see the membership requirements of each on their website.

Come, come......it is a bank holiday weekend; probably the most important weekend of the year one for those trying to sell houses and boats.

You don't expect a yacht broker to be WORKING over this, of all weekends, do you!?! :eek:

As the owner of the boat that Jonic worked on i can confirm that to my surprise he was working on saturday! Excellent service!!!!!
 
We once travelled 80 miles to Tollesbury to see a Snapdragon with a beautiful custom interior, a real beauty, but she was cheapish so we rang first and checked that there were no issues. Having been assured that she was a rare beauty indeed we set off. Stepping inside the cabin we realised immediately that all the photos had been taken facing the half of the cabin that had been finished, not the half that was a bloody abandoned building site.

Then when we sold Muddy Paws we used Howard Ford yacht broker in Woodbridge - thoroughly professional, helpful and efficient. Got us a good price and kept us informed all the way through whilst being scrupulously honest.

Tollesbury got a snotty email from us, Howard Ford got a personal visit to thank him.

I don't know why you take things so personally; everybody blows smoke up your arse - so enjoy it. Methink the lady doth protest too much.

Anyway, here's a real story for you.

American friends of SWMBO crewed for a rich Canadian guy. He had an awesome, drop dead gorgeous Sparkman and Stephens 60ft sloop (yes, sloop). He had it sailed to wherever he wanted it in the world, flew over and spent a week or so on board.

One winter (about 2004) the boat was wintering afloat in Alicante and the owner decided to put it on the market for £1m USD. SWMBO's friend flew back to their home on a Fijiian island

By pure chance, we had a very wealthy friend staying with us for Christmas in Spain. He was looking for a new boat and I mentioned this one.

I phoned the broker on 23 December and asked if we could view on 26 December (Boxing Day is not a public holiday). I remember saying that this was a serious buyer, that i knew the boat and was not a time waster.

No problem, he said and we drove from Cartagena to Alicante.

The office was closed.

I spent 30 minutes before I managed to get through to someone. they arrived at the office one hour later.

They keys to the boat had been taken away by another broker who had 'gone off into the mountains'. Great. not even an apology (a British broker BTW). Oh yes, he could not even find any literature or specification on the boat.

So, we 'viewed' her - under it's winter cover - from the quayside.

Even today i am still astonished at the extraordinary attitude. I might understand it if this was a clapped out Centaur but ...£1m USD.

Our friend.....? Bought a boat in the US, sailed it to NZ and back to Spain singlehanded.
 
five years ago First Mate and I had 40k to spend on a boat. We were appalled at the way four brokers treated us. On the other hand, three brokers treated us with courtesy, professionalism and integrity. The good ones were SD Marine, Hamble Point, Slipway at Emsworth and Michael Schmitd, also at Hamble Point. The poor ones- after making and confirming an 11am appointment we met the broker to be told that the boat was on the walkway, here are the keys, sorry I've got to go but I've got a real prospect elsewhere! Two misrepresented what they were selling big time and another shut the door in our face as he was going home at 4pm on a bank holiday Monday. Several other punters were expecting to view at his premises too. The good ones were good, the bad ones appalling.

Having worked 6 days straight I am closing now to take the kids to the beach, although the phone will be on.:p

Is this wrong and should I carry on through? I will be working tomorrow. :cool: But might pop to Ikea for an hour.
