We have a 1980s 38ft Swedish built cruiser-racer based in Ardfern/Craobh area which we are planning to put on the market in 2027. Would people advise to keep the boat in this area to sell, or would it make the boat recieve more prospective buyers if she were moved down to somewhere in the Clyde with easier transport access for people visiting from England and other locations? Any thoughts or advice from those who have experience in such matters would be greatly appreciated.

I’d give the broker Mark Cameron a call. Very active broker on the west coast and I’m sure he’d give you good advice. I can’t imagine the difference between Ardfern and the Clyde making a particularly huge difference imo.

We sold a similar boat from Croabh. But these are individual experiences, a broker should have the bigger picture. Fewer tyre kickers if it's far to go?

As a potential buyer, we found Mark to be that rarest of things, an honest and sensible broker.

Don't get me started on Boatshed Scotland...

Priced right and well presented, solid history, good record of maintenance, clearly advertised with up to date pics and video, it will sell based in Ardfern or Craobh. Folks will travel to see the right boat. I don’t think it matters much if it is Clyde or Oban area. The tyre kicker comment is very valid.

Recently a chap and his partner travelled to Craobh for the right boat, from down south, posted on here. So it is happening. In a buyers market, price and condition is everything more than location in a world where MABs are 10 a penny.

I think it depends on what you think the market will be like - if you think she'll sell in Scotland then location doesn't matter too much and Mark is a good bet for Argyll. Sold through him in the past and we were lucky to have a local buyer otherwise I think we could have been waiting a while.

The Clyde and especially anywhere accessible from Glasgow airport will give you a better range of buyers. I don't know the Clyde brokers that well but think that Mark doesn't typically operate past Loch Fyne. Maybe Miles Stratton or Peter Cameron? Haven't liked my dealings with Chris Dodgshon but that may just be me.

@sawduster Mark Cameron does operate “past Loch Fyne”. There are boats on his website which demonstrate that. I stopped counting at 13 with prices from £14k upwards.

If the OP wants to use Mark Cameron, currently there is no reason not to.

To be more clear I was talking about the Clyde rather than further afield. I won't be going through the listings but my understanding was that most marinas on the Clyde have an attached broker so get a bit territorial, reducing the scope for other broker activity there.

you know your boat - would someone fly to Glasgow to come and see it? If your main demographic are already in Scotland I don’t think Croabh-ish will make any real difference.
