I need to find a way to stop rainwater from dribbling down the chain from the winch drum and into the chain locker. It is not possible to fit an elbow type entry to the chain l.ocker. I have tried putting a shaped bung in the hawse pipe this helps but water still gets in. The anchor locker has a drain but when the boat is on the pontoon mooring the boat is still so water lodges in the bottom of the locker, when the boat is sailing the boats motion shoots the water down the drain.
Would I need to vent the canvas cover to prevent the the winch to breathe and dry out.
Another Idea is to make a canvas skirt and lash the small end around the chain just below the winch drum so that the bottom of the skirt covers the hawse pipe.

Any ideas or advise good or bad welcome.

I made a pvc fabric cover for my winch 3 years ago, not to solve your problem, just to protect it and the up/down buttons on top from sunlight degredation. No problems. Although the cover would get scuffed a bit I can, in an emergency, operate the winch with the cover on if i need to drop the hook quickly and had left the cover on. Your idea if a skirt just around the chain would mean a delay while you remove it.

Fresh water in your locker might be advantageous - as it will wash the salt out.

I advocate a fresh water wash of the locker (and contents) when ever possible. When you wash the decks down - wash out the locker. Also leaving the locker open to allow it to, subsequently, dry out. Sealing it off will simply enhance the speed of any corrosion - so encouraging air to circulate would be advantageous.
