Can anyone recall the name (or url) of that firm that makes varnished wood launches for the Thames. Very swish stylish machines with a very raked forward transom, all finished in varnished wood like Riva Aquarama. About 25 feet LOA. I'm not thinking of those Williams boats that are copycat Aquaramas, the ones I'm interested in are slow, specifically for Thames/river use. I seem to recall MBY ran a feature a year or so ago but I don't keep back issues. Friend has just bought house on Thames and thinks would be good for day tripping (he was on for a Sunseeker Carmargue but I explained not suitable etc)

Yes it is Peter Freebody at Hurley, tel - 01628-826691.
The place looks like a tip, but my god, the standard of workmanship and finish he gets on his wooden boats is fanastic.
I remember seeing an electric slipper launch he did for a very rich American client which was about £30k!

I am assuming he is still in business.

Peter Freebody is most certainly still going strong, however I'm not sure if he is producing new boats now. The most common slipper launches were made by Andrews. Now sadly defunct. If it's day's out you want it's worth considering one of the modern electric powered launches (also available in wood). There are distinct license fee advantages and there are now several charging points on the river, according to the EA.

I think I know the type of boat - I have always referred to them as a 'Slipper Launch', and I have never heard of them referred to by a particular maker. I believe they have a small petrol engine. Some examples I have seen are fitted out in colonial style wicker furniture! Very nice!

Re: Thanks all

Thanks for the info. Will follow up. Yes, "slipper launch" is indeed exactly what I meant, should have said that in my post but I forgot that terminology!

Re: Thanks all

There is a yard called "Wooton's" at Marlow/ Bourne End on the Thames, who make a composite modern Slipper Launch. (GRP hull, timber top + any type of engine that fits - electric, diesel or petrol) Slightly frowned on by the purists but seems much more sensible to me.

Beware Freebody!!
Superb craftsmanship at horrific prices and forget delivery dates. Remember to include the year, not just month of delivery.

Both will almost certainly be at the Thames Traditional Boat Rally, Henley on Thames on the weekend of 21/22 July 2001.

A mate of mine in Norfolk makes the kind of thing youre after.
Edwardian type cabin craft, indian canoes 21 feet with wicker furniture and slipper type launches. Please try to see his work it is stunning! Most are powered by electricity but they have done steam i believe. Look for "The Secret Boatyard".
E mail me for phone no.
