It has just occured to me that my heart will be in much better condition this year now that Concord is no more. That double bang used to catch me out every time, usually as we approached the shipping channels off Cherbourg, wondering why a merchant ship should be shooting at us.

Re: Luddites unite!

I am pleased that you see the demise of supersonic travel with a positive attitude! Can anyone identify any other areas of modern life where regression would be positive for the sailor - other than of course, fewer boats?

Re: Luddites unite!

Notwithstanding the improvement of my nerves, I certainly regret the passing of Concord and sincerely hope that one day a replacement aircraft will take its place.

I'm not a great regressor so don't beleive we could improve the world by going backwards apart from, that is, all my own personal grumps. And we all know that one man's grumps is another man's fantasy!

Last year crossing to Alderney we were startled by the boom boom you mention - wondered whether the gas had just blown up or we were abeing fired on till a quick check on all around revealed little different.

Must say it frightened the living daylights out of us on the way there, but just gave a bit of a headache on the way back!

Back in the early 80's I was working in the defence industry and was involved in a project with the Aussie air force. There was a photo doing the rounds at the time of an RAAF F111 coming in over the beach at 900Kts and 100', the plane was kicking up a wake a mile long with spray upto a couple of hundred feet. Now you have to admire the pilot's style, but I would not like to have been in a boat that day!

You ought to try being in a hang glider, when two RAF Tornados try the same stunt!

Came straight at us (using us for target practice we reckon) and then peeled off left and right a few hundred feet away. The turbulence was sphincter loosening!

Tgt practice

Feeling was prob ditto when the guys saw you but feel happy that they wouldn't have used you as tgt practice. Can't normally get the nav to find a stationary tgt let alone something with the rcs of a baked bean can!

Re: Tgt practice

There were ten of us flying (Yorkshire Dales), so we'd put out a Notam early that morning - so unless something wrong with the Notam system, then they should have already known exactly where we were

Re: Tgt practice

They should've known where you were but can't give a reason why they blew through. Mistakes happen, not very comforting for you, but they are taken seriously when they do. Hang-gliders are fairly small to see at speed so sphincter tightning moments on both sides if we get close. (P.S. you make an awful tgt!)

Re: Tgt practice

The other sphincter clenching moment was when a twin rotor US helicopter decided to take a short cut over Merthyr Common, a regular hang gliding site. Turbulence was dreadful!. Hang gliders diving for cover everywhere. That one was reported officially. Though going back 20 odd years!

All good bar converations in retrospect!
