A German next to me has just set off for Preveza. He told me he's paying €6000 to truck his boat from there to Germany. I am in contact with him so could get details if you're interested. Does that help any?

Been through that for real.

It is not practical to ship all the way by road from Greece. The main route (which is how all the new Greek yachts get there is via Slovenia. So you have to sail the boat up there and get a truck. Not such a big problem if your destination is N. Europe, but problematic if you want straight to UK. So offload at a channel port and sail over. Truck will be £5-6k plus up to £1k cranage, mast stepping - plus of course the time and money to sail 400 miles up the Adriatic.

Alternatives are to sail to south of France or Spain and truck from there. More likely to get a truck direct to UK, particularly from Spain. Trucking costs about the same, but sailing time longer. That is the route that I took (via Sant Carles) with a paid for skipper and my total costs including flights for skipper and crew, food, diesel, marina costs etc from Corfu to Poole came to over £8k in 2010.

Delivery by sea can be done for a bit less, but takes a month or so and can be hard on the boat, particularly making north up the Iberian coast and across Biscay.

Even if you did it yourself as a "holiday" your costs are likely to be in the region of £4-5k.

If you are thinking of buying a boat in Greece because they look "cheap" - they are generally cheaper because there is a limited market there and the cost of getting a boat to the UK usually wipes out any perceived saving.

However it it is usually worth buying a boat there if you want to use it there rather than take one from the UK - unless the passage out there is one of the objectives - as for many it is.

One point I have read many times - don't think of going through Italy. Apparently it is prohibitively expensive and excessively regulated, so very few hauliers will agree to it.

Yes, that is why Slovenia is so popular as you can bypass Italy going north.

Could you not get it plonked on a ship in Athens and taken across? No idea whether this is more expensive.

Forgot that - but forget it. Quote I got was £13k plus the cradle for 37'. Only really sensible if you are shipping a large power boat or perhaps a classic racing boat you don't want to wear out going on its own bottom.

Yikes! 13k!
How about sailing out and getting rescued by a UK bound ship?!!
I know a big ship skipper who rescued 2 separate ocean yachtsmen and took their boats on board. Not just free transport but you could get free passage to the UK. Apparently the grub is not bad either. ???

Cost of bring boats back to N Europe where they might find buyers is one of the reasons why the greek islands are littered with abandoned old boats. Recently looked at a well worn old Moody from the 1980's abandoned in the Aegean. No longer seaworthy without a lot of work so incapable of making it back by sea and no practical way of road transport. One of those dreams that started a few years ago in UK and turned into a nightmare for the owners - although the bit in between was probably worth it!

My friend is using this company http://www.yachttransport-schriever.com/. He speaks very highly of them and says he'd use them again.
