I've just noticed the above headline in last Saturday's Times that I had left on the boat. The just of the story is here:
Leaky borders might mean boat licences

I think that this comes close to being a late April 1st joke. All it would do would create a tax on all sailors and boaters not involved in people smuggling.
So much for the search facility. But it seems I'm not the only one who hasn't seen it.Already covered at some length:
Compulsory UK licensing for boat owners to reduce illegal immigrants
Neither. Its a non boating civil servants wet dream. Doesnt matter that it cant work / wont work, he / she /it has been asked for a solution to a minor problem and has come up with a typical civil service idea. Given the millions of unliceneced acras on our roads not to mention the millions of illegals and all the untraced frauds etc, it does look likely that HMG could enforce this doesnt it?Is it for "leaky borders" or to raise more taxes???
Do the boats come from France? Plenty UK criminal people smugglers, horrible peopleHas anyone told the French of this plan which is where most immigrant boats come from?
I really like the idea of getting a RIB into a suitcase! Press reports - don't you love them?Do the boats come from France? Plenty UK criminal people smugglers, horrible people

Never get ignorance get in the way of a good storyI really like the idea of getting a RIB into a suitcase! Press reports - don't you love them?
Do you think it's not happening and the National Crime Agency are telling lies?Never get ignorance get in the way of a good story
I was referring to the idea of a RIB fitting in a suitcase, and the generally poor accuracy of newspapers. I'm well aware of the problems of people trafficking and the use of small, often dangerously inadequate boats. I've every sympathy for the poor sods who are lead to believe the streets here are paved with gold and everyone's given a house and money on arrival, so they hock themselves to a criminal, but would have no objection at all to "creative" solutions being found to stop traffickers.Do you think it's not happening and the National Crime Agency are telling lies?
NCA issues warning to maritime industry over organised crime links to small boats
Where on earth would that have come from ?the poor sods who are led to believe the streets here are paved with gold and everyone's given a house and money on arrival,
The traffickers who are drumming up business.Where on earth would that have come from ?
