This weekend is the Irvine Boat Jumble, in Ayrshire (my area), SCOTLAND(NOORTH of Dae BORDER), for those of you who think theres nothing north of the midlands!!!!

Have only ever been to 1 jumble a long long time ago, and can't remember it.

Is it usually just a load of junk, or is it new boat gear at sale prices? " Cause us Scots love a bargain!!! "/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Are there any other forum members that will be going to it?

cheers..

Alistair...

P.s. Is this a good place for me to look for an outboard for my dingy?

They're usually worth a trip Al.

I've been to the local one at Carlton Towers, nr Goole, and also Newark.

For a boat enthusiast there's usually enough to keep you interested for a couple of hours, even if you don't need owt. Not quite the same for SWMBO etc. Drop them off at the local shoe warehouse on the way.

I find that prices often compare the ex.vat mail order, so If you after a few bits, you can often be saving 17.5%.

Perhaps they're more useful if your boat is more in the 'project' phase than your Rinker, but at least when you get that offer-you-can't-refuse, and buy a 10 year old fly (albiet a petrol one!), you'll know where to shop in future.

I've just been to my local one at North Weald airfield, total waste of time. They charged £4.00 EACH to get in and it was either secondhand stuff which was pretty much junk or market traders selling new stuff at chandler prices.
Might as well have paid £8.00 to my local chandlers to let me have a look around his shop.

I\'m going

My yacht club Kip Cruising Club has it's usual stall at it. We find it a good way to allow our members to sell surplus 'gear' and raise some funds for the Club. Just hope the weathers good after the disaster of the Spring one.

I normally go to the Irvine jumble but end up spending far more than I plan... so might not bother this year having nothing specific to go for.
Here are a few observations, for what they are worth;
Classic boat bits - not much around and expensive when they are.
Paint - bargains can be found, but the tins are pretty bashed about and its hit and miss. I did get a 5 litre tin of International primer/undercoat with a WD crows foot for £18. AF isn't much cheaper than the swindlery price.
Rope - offcuts are a bit cheaper but buying from the roll doesn't seem much cheaper.
Instruments - take a mag. with you to compare prices. Some of the stallholders are regular retailers and warranties stand. Good to actually see the stuff before buying.
Chandlery - Go round all the pitches before putting hand in pocket. There are some bargains if you look around but prices vary stall to stall. I got a dozen ss shackles for the normal price of three. Good change to compare quality and price with items like fenders.
Clothing - bottom of the range stuff is cheaper. Not much from the "quality" end.
Tools - no better and possibly worse than a street market tool stall.
Dinghies and outboards - Pay your money and take your chance!

Good luck!

Why do you think boat break ins are on the up .Support the boat jumbles and you support the crooks. I bet boat break-ins have gone up in that area recently.

Absolute nonsence! I know that breakins occur however there are still some reputible people around who can and do use Boat Jumbles to help offset the cost of their sport/hobby,the club I'm a member of encourages it's members to do so. Yes! insurance premiums are on the increase, ask yourself why, it's not just due to boat breakins more likely to be to the 'I'm insured attitude of the so who cares brigade' and not the normal careful boat owner.
