last december, right before christmas,
this was during Corona lock down, we were able to fly to the boat in Cagliari Sardegna !
only a handfull travellers on the ryanair flight, obligatory corona test before and after the trip.

we replaced the battery's:
2 banks of each 12 x 105Ah Deep cycle Lead acid,
replaced by:
2 banks of each 4 x 265Ah Gel battery

we now have a bit less Ah's than before, but I hope that the improved setup will compensate with that.
2 powerfull battery banks is quite important for us, as we run the stabilisers at anker from battery power, (no generator) for at least 2 ..3 hours.





the blue Victron boxes on the SB side bank (house battery's) are battery ballancers. actually 2 would be sufficient, but I had 2 left from the previous setup, so placed 2 x 2 in parallel for faster ballancing.

some more work during that weekend:

we removed the Stainless Steel Anker chain guide, in order to bend the side flanges back a bit inwards
over the years, they were bend outwards from anchoring in very strong wind ...
so that there was a gap between the chain roller and the flange, in which the chain could get stucked,
(all hard to explain, but reasonable simple job)



bending took place on the work bench in the ER.

Crikey, @BartW .... serious work going on there! I thought I was doing well changing some engine gaskets over the winter and then you come out with all these pics. Serious kudos, a pure labor of love.

@longjohnsilver - I was lucky enough to visit Blue Angel a few years ago. The first thing that hit me was the wicked bathing platform. IMHO, one of the most important aspects of a boat (even in Ireland, where i'm based). The fact that BA has a hi-lo was a serious bonus, given the practicality for BartW (and crew) and their love for being in / under the water.

I was almost taking notes while on-board BA, thinking "this is how i'll do it.... some day"

Eating and drinking is a necessity, but doing it well is a fine art! (y):)

I admid that my wording is sometimes vague,
but your replenishment is the most accurate description of reality !
while the place "where" and "with whom" I'm eating can also make a big difference ;)

It has been said many times, this hi lo platform is such a valuable addition to the boat,
this, together with the stabs, are items we can't do without anymore; the way we use the boat in the med.

Absolutely, LJS. Besides, I can confirm that also the transom opening, visible at the bottom of the previous pic of the platform with the batteries, makes a helluva difference.
I can remember B asking for suggestions on that as one of the first mods he made, together with the transom door, because the boat originally had just a ladder. And I suggested him to keep the ladder, because I thought it wasn't worth the hassle of cutting and reshaping the transom.
But boys, how wrong I was! :giggle:

.......and he certainly does have a lot of parties out there, day or night :)

Sitting up on the submerged platform at midnight, in 28 deg C water on a hot night in an empty, calm anchorage, surrounded by the blue underwater lights, listening to music on an amazing sound system, while the disco ball does it‘s thing.....was one of the highlights for our young people while onboard. There may have been beer involved.....but I could neither confirm nor deny;)

.....and this is from the maestro of the fine art himself :)

Our European friends certainly do an elegant and hospitable service of entertaining their friends aboard.
Mind you the Med is always going to be the perfect environment to conduct this.....

I keep meaning to ask this Bart. Do you have a DMX controller attached to the lasers for the disco ball and underwater lights? I kinda recall you are in this industry?

at the moment no DMX controller, the spots have a automatic color change function
they do have a DMX input, aswell as the underwater lights,
so have been thinking to add a compact DMX controller, but not high on the priority list.

nothing todo with lights
Its an insult for a sound engineer to be associated with light :)

A few weeks ago, we did some upgrades, worth posting in this blog

Right at the end of least season, I noticed that rudder cylinder was badly corroded,
Even leaking oil through the corroded body


This is the Old cylinder:





I took the cylinder to Belgium, and gave it to a local specialized co,
they told me that it is custom made, impossible to buy of the shelf,
so they repaired the old one, new tube and new shaft, and new seals
this is the rebuild cylinder before painting and reinstallation:







Last summer we had quite a few problems with both genny’s,
Was able to keep them alive but now gave them some new parts and a complete service





One of the problems this summer was a warn Impellor






The next problem was a broken belt, luckily new belts onboard,
But soon we discovered that the new belt was warn again very quickly,
by swapping with other side, we discovered there was some imbalance in the dynamo

A new dynamo was ordered after the season.

to give a idea to get access to one genny

Start dismantling














This summer after one genset started producing loads of smoke, I discovered that the pushrods on both engines were hardly warn,

And after swapping with other genny, still the same, fast warn after a few hours running time:





After some investigation we discovered that the shaft with all those valve rockers had very little to no oil on them when running,
With a spare oil pressure sensor from our MAN engines I was able to measure the oil pressure, and noticed it was below spec.
Putting a small washer behind the oil pressure regulation valve, I was able to bring oil pressure back to normal values, (it appeared that both gensets suffer the same oil pressure loss. So I adjusted both.





now we replaced the pushrods by new

After doing this genset service and testrun, I noticed a leak on one exhaust riser
(the other one was repaired a few years ago by the service guy in Tivat Montenegro.

It was difficult to get access, but nevertheless managed todo this repair ourselves

Luckyly with help from my friend Mapism, resident on here,
I was able to find a local SS constructor in Cagliari, who could make a new part for the massive amount of 120 e :)

last year my son did a bad maneuver with the crane; while lowering the tender aside the boat, he didn’t realize that the rope was tangled inside the crane, so the 600Kg tender went in to free fall for about 0.7 meter,
resulting in a huge impact on the crane, and its mountings, creating severe cracks in the FB floor construction, luckily we were able to still use the crane until the end of the season (waw those Canados are build strong ?)


last winter we placed temporary reinforcing SS profiles on top of crane base and the flybride floor, but now we prepared everything to build this Steel reinforcement inside the cockpit ceiling:




With our fleet of 1 tender and 2 jetski’s on top, the wooden fb floor started to sag a bit,
Before screwing the Steel profiles and some plywood ribs in position,
we pushed UP the construction with a acrow prop !




Some more reinforcing on the FB on the crane base, tobe covered later with a new FB cupboard






Since many years we have a winter cover on the FB,
A few straps supporting this cover are fixed on the front screen railing,
and after all those years the plexi front screen was bend slightly inwards,

therefor we made some “winter” reinforcing studs,
these can be taken off when the winter cover goes off ( from may until October..)

The problem is that old farts like myself can’t drive such a toy,
so during lockdown early 2021, we purchased a brand new Jetski,
It’s a very Crowded fb now ?
The jetski sits on a basic wooden beam frame

A few of those doorlatches have to be added for avoiding free movement
we fix it with straps during navigation





During summer I discovered a cooling water leak on one engine exhaust pipe





Those are the Old clips





We untied the clips, and moved the big rubber hose, and cleaned it,
And fit it back together with new ss “Heavy” clips.
the big diamer of 350mm is achieved by coupling two chorter clips





Another problem this summer, a broken capacitor on the seawater take up pump of the water maker,
We were able to continue to produce water by opening the pump, spinning the impellor to get it running, and quickly close it and let it run,
I don’t have a pic from the new capacitor.






And again a problem last summer a broken airco bulckhead connection,

Luckily was able to repair it temporarily with some hose and fittings, and now we made this repair, nice and clean, at the same time we flushed the cirquit ( brown water), and filled again with cooling liquid.





That’s it for now, Some more jobs todo for spring 2022
